2. FEDRA South Dakota Branch

The South Dakota FEDRA District is one of the smaller but economically important administrative regions within the post-outbreak United States. Centered around a fortified Quarantine Zone established near surviving transportation corridors in eastern South Dakota, the district avoided the catastrophic population losses seen in many major metropolitan areas due to its comparatively low population density and strong agricultural base. While not considered a major military command, the district earned a reputation for stability, efficient administration, and dependable industrial production. Its population is sustained by surrounding government-operated farms, nearby livestock operations, and carefully managed trade convoys, allowing it to maintain a relatively high standard of living compared to many other Quarantine Zones.

South Dakota's greatest contribution to the national reconstruction effort is its textile industry. Shortly after FEDRA's formation, engineers identified several surviving warehouses, clothing manufacturers, and agricultural resources that could support large-scale fabric production. By 2015, the district had become the primary supplier of uniforms, blankets, tents, canvas, backpacks, bedding, work gloves, sandbags, and other cloth goods used throughout the Quarantine Zone network. Cotton, wool, and synthetic fibers recovered from pre-outbreak stockpiles are processed in heavily guarded factories operating around the clock, with civilian workers assigned through the National Labor Service. Every FEDRA-issued uniform—whether worn by soldiers, engineers, medical personnel, or civil administrators—contains a small production code identifying the South Dakota Textile Authority, a mark widely associated with reliability and quality.

Because its factories are considered strategically vital, security throughout the district is extensive. Armed checkpoints surround industrial sectors, supply depots are monitored continuously, and convoy escorts accompany nearly every shipment leaving the district. Rather than producing heavy weapons or armored vehicles, South Dakota specializes in the practical necessities that keep the reconstruction effort functioning: replacement uniforms, cold-weather clothing, hospital linens, protective masks, canvas covers, field tents, backpacks, and repair materials. Among FEDRA logisticians there is a common saying: "Armies march on ammunition, but they survive on South Dakota cloth." Although often overshadowed by larger industrial districts, the South Dakota branch has become an indispensable part of FEDRA's national supply network, proving that rebuilding a nation depends as much on steady production and dependable logistics as it does on soldiers guarding the walls.
