Icecrown Citadel: Seat of the Frozen Throne

@Icecrown Citadel stands as the terrifying, absolute epicenter of the @Scourge threat on Azeroth, serving as the sovereign seat of power for @Arthas Menethil, the @Lich King. Located at the northernmost peak of the frozen continent of @Northrend, the citadel’s dark history began when the demon lord Kil'jaeden hurled a block of celestial, unyielding ice from the Twisting Nether into the heart of the Icecrown glacier. Encased within this block was the tortured soul of the orcish shaman Ner'zhul, transformed into the first @Lich King.

The impact of the projectile blasted a deep, jagged chasm into the ice, creating the foundation for what would become the Frozen Throne. From this icy prison, the Lich King utilized his immense psychic malice to telepathically subjugate the local wendigos, ice trolls, and nerubian subterranean empires, gathering the primordial armies that would eventually orchestrate the destruction of Lordaeron and the @Kingdom of Quel'Thalas during the Third War.

The Saronite Metamorphosis

Following the climax of the Third War, the @Death Knight @Arthas Menethil traveled north to the glacier, defeated the demon hunter @Illidan Stormrage in a brutal duel at the base of the spire, and shattered the icy casing of the throne. By donning the @The Helm of Domination, @Arthas Menethil merged his soul with Ner'zhul, ascending as the unified, supreme @Lich King.

Upon awakening from a multi-year slumber, @Arthas Menethil ordered the systematic, grand-scale construction of the modern citadel. The @Scourge harvested massive quantities of Saronite—a volatile, near-indestructible black metal formed from the crystallized blood of the ancient Old God Yogg-Saron.

Enslaved nerubian workers and mindless @Undead legions forged this profane metal into a colossal, spiked gothic fortress that completely encased the original glacier, rising thousands of feet into the sky like a jagged crown of black iron and ice.

Anatomy of the Profane Fortress

@Icecrown Citadel is engineered to be an impenetrable, multi-tiered death machine, designed to meat-grind any invading army long before they can reach the peak:

  • The Lower Spire (The Breach): The heavily fortified ground level, guarded by Lord Marrowgar—a towering abomination constructed from the bones of fallen invaders—and Lady Deathwhisper, the supreme overseer of the Cult of the Damned.

  • The Plagueworks: The bio-weapon laboratory of the citadel. Here, the mad scientist Professor Putricide refines hyper-deadly variations of the Scourge plague and oversees the creation of massive flesh titans, including Festergut and Rotface.

  • The Crimson Halls: The sovereign quarters of the San'layn—undead blood elves raised by @Arthas Menethil to serve as his tacticians and vampiric commanders, led by Blood-Queen Lana'thel.

  • The Frostwing Halls: The sub-zero nesting grounds where @Arthas Menethil keeps his most terrifying aerial weapon: Sindragosa, the ancient consort of Malygos, whom Arthas personally resurrected into undeath as a massive Frost Wyrm.

The Apex: The Frozen Throne

At the absolute peak of the central spire, past the gauntlet of traps and horrors, lies the Frozen Throne itself. Accessible only via powerful telemetric teleportation platforms and a winding stone ramp wrapped in howling, sub-zero gales, the throne sits atop a sheer pinnacle of pure ice.

It is here that @Arthas Menethil sits in eternal vigilance, his eyes glowing with a cold, blue malevolence, holding the cursed runeblade @Frostmourne across his knees. From this vantage point, he maintains telepathic control over millions of @Undead across the globe, waiting for the mortal world's greatest heroes to throw themselves against his defenses.
