The night elves originally forged a pair of magnificent, magically attuned twin swords: Shalla'tor (the Shadow Render) and Ellemayne (the Reaver). These exquisite weapons were wielded alongside each other by the elven twins Vor'Illian and Lo'Vellian to slaughter hordes of invading demons. Each sword possessed a distinct cosmic signature; while Ellemayne was adorned with a crimson gem and channeled aggressive martial prowess, Shalla'tor bore a blue gem, focusing precision and defensive grace. Following the Great Sundering, the twin blades faded into historical obscurity, eventually falling into the protective custody of Lady @Jaina Proudmoore.
The creation of @Shalamayne is fundamentally linked to a dark, draconic conspiracy that nearly brought down the @Kingdom of Stormwind. Years ago, the black dragon Onyxia, operating in human form as Lady Katrana Prestor, kidnapped King @Varian Wrynn. Utilizing a volatile, dark ritual on Alcaz Island, Onyxia attempted to kill @Varian Wrynn's indomitable, strong-willed warrior persona while leaving his passive, easily manipulated self intact to rule as her puppet.
The ritual was disrupted, resulting in a bizarre anomaly: @Varian Wrynn's soul and body were physically fractured into two distinct human beings. One @Varian Wrynn emerged as a fierce, amnesiac gladiator champion known as "Lo'Gosh" (the Ghost Wolf), while the other returned to Stormwind as a soft-spoken, politically submissive monarch.
For months, the two Varians lived completely separate lives, entirely unaware of the other's existence, until Lo'Gosh fought his way back to the capital to expose Onyxia's deception.
Recognizing that both Varians were incomplete and required absolute unity to save their kingdom, Lady @Jaina Proudmoore intervened before their final assault on Onyxia's Lair. She presented the night elven twin blades to the monarchs: the aggressive, battle-hardened Lo'Gosh claimed Ellemayne, while the diplomatic, tactical Varian took up Shalla'tor.
During the apocalyptic battle deep within the dragon's subterranean marsh, Onyxia attempted to cast the dark, identity-destroying spell once more, intending to permanently erase Lo'Gosh. In an act of supreme self-sacrifice, the diplomatic Varian leaped in front of his warrior counterpart to shield him from the blast.
Instead of obliterating them, the conflicting energies of the black dragon's spell inverted. The magical feedback violently fused the two separate @Varian Wrynn back into a single, complete, and whole King.
Crucially, this supernatural convergence extended directly to their weapons. Strung together by the magic of the spell, Ellemayne and Shalla'tor slammed together, violently melting and reforming into a single, massive greatsword: @Shalamayne. Wielding the newly formed artifact, the unified King @Varian Wrynn lunged forward, using the weapon's massive, glowing edge to cleanly impale and decapitate Onyxia within her own brood-chamber.
