The @Knights of the Ebon Blade are an elite order of renegade death knights who successfully broke free from the iron psychic grip of the Lich King. Their tragic origin began in the plaguelands of Lordaeron, where the Lich King, @Arthas Menethil, raised fallen champions of the Alliance and the Horde to serve as his most ruthless commanders. Formed as a specialized vanguard known as the Death Knights of @Acherus, they were garrisoned aboard the floating necropolis of @Acherus : The Ebon Hold, under the direct command of Highlord @Darion Mograine.
@Arthas Menethil ordered @Darion Mograine and the @Knights of the Ebon Blade to march upon @Hearthglen and annihilate the Argent Dawn. This directive, however, was a calculated suicide mission. @Arthas Menethil deliberately sent his death knights into a slaughter to draw out his true target: Highlord @Tirion Fordring . When the battle commenced, the sacred ground of the chapel severely weakened the death knights, leading to their swift defeat. When @Arthas Menethil materialized on the battlefield, he openly admitted that he viewed @Darion Mograine and the @Knights of the Ebon Blade as nothing more than disposable ammunition.
This betrayal shattered the psychological conditioning of the death knights. In a final act of defiance and familial love, @Darion Mograine threw the corrupted runeblade, @Ashbringer, to @Tirion Fordring. The holy ground of the chapel instantly purified the blade, and @Tirion Fordring used its immense Light energy to strike back at @Arthas Menethil, forcing the Dark Lord to retreat back to @Northrend.
With their free will restored but their souls forever altered by the horrific deeds they had committed under @The Scourge, every gathered @Death Knight rallied under @Darion Mograine. Renaming themselves the @Knights of the Ebon Blade, they immediately turned their weapons against their former master. They launched a swift, brutal siege on the remaining Scourge loyalists aboard @Acherus, cleansing the necropolis and claiming the floating fortress as their official headquarters.
Though free, the @Knights of the Ebon Blade faced immediate existential exile. They were monsters in the eyes of the living—@Undead killing machines who had slaughtered innocents across the @Eastern Kingdoms. To secure a place in the coming war against @The Scourge, @Darion Mograine dispatched his most trusted death knights to deliver letters of commendation from @Tirion Fordring to King @Varian Wrynn of the Alliance and Warchief @Thrall of the Horde.
The integration was incredibly tense. Upon entering Stormwind City and Orgrimmar, the death knights were pelted with rotten fruit, spat upon, and cursed by the citizenry. However, both faction leaders begrudgingly accepted the Ebon Blade's allegiance, recognizing that their intimate, inside knowledge of the Scourge’s military tactics, necromantic runes, and anatomy would be indispensable for the upcoming invasion of @Northrend.
