The Ordering of Azeroth stands as the foundational mythic epoch of the world’s history, marking the transition of the planet from a chaotic, primordial nightmare into a structured, balanced world of law and ecosystem. Millions of years ago, the Pantheon—a cosmic council of colossal, metallic-skinned godlike beings known as Titans—discovered a nascent world-soul slumbering within the core of a remote planet. This world-soul, destined to one day awaken as a Titan more powerful than any before it, was being actively suffocated by a malicious, parasitic entity of pure void and madness.
Recognizing the immense danger this corruption posed to the cosmos, the Pantheon, led by Highfather Aman'Thul, descended upon the planet. They resolved to purge the corruption and "order" the world, establishing a pristine, regulated environment where the world-soul could grow and gestate in absolute safety.
Upon their arrival, the Titans found the planet entirely dominated by the Black Empire—a sprawling, flesh-scape of cyclopean citadels and writhing tentacles ruled by the Old Gods (C'Thun, Yogg-Saron, N'Zoth, and Y'Shaarj). These horrific entities utilized four immortal Elemental Lords—Ragnaros the Firelord, Al'Akir the Windlord, Neptulon the Tidehunter, and Therazane the Stonemother—to keep the planet in a state of perpetual, violent elemental warfare.
Because the Titans were too colossal to intervene directly without physically shattering the crust of the planet, they crafted an elite vanguard of massive stone and iron servants, known as the Titan-forged. Led by empowered Keepers such as Odyn, Thorim, Loken, and Archaedas, this titan army waged an apocalyptic war of attrition against the Black Empire:
The Elemental Banishment: The Titan-forged systematically defeated the Elemental Lords. Unable to truly destroy them without destabilizing the world’s ecology, the Keepers forged the Elemental Plane—a set of pocket dimensions—and banished the elementals into eternal exile.
The Imprisonment of the Void: The Keepers marched upon the citadels of the Old Gods. After realizing that ripping the parasites out of the crust caused mortal wounds to the world-soul itself, the Titans opted for containment. They constructed colossal, subterranean titan prisons deep beneath the earth, sealing the Old Gods away under layers of absolute machinery and holy wards (such as Ahn'Qiraj in the south and Uduar in the frozen north).
With the Black Empire overthrown, the Titans sought to heal the massive, bleeding wound left in the planet's crust where the Old God Y'Shaarj had been forcefully ripped away. The vital life-essence of the world-soul was actively hemorrhaging into space. To arrest this cosmic bleeding, the Titans coalesced the raw, magical arcane blood into a massive, shimmering lake of boundless power at the absolute center of the world's singular landmass.
This lake was named the Well of Eternity. It served as a perpetual font of immense arcane energy, accelerating the evolution of flora and fauna across the planet. Around this font of life, the Titans shaped a massive, singular continent, which they named Kalimdor—"Land of Eternal Starlight" in the ancient titan tongue.
To maintain the absolute structural integrity of the newly ordered world, the Titans constructed a network of massive underground laboratory-vaults, such as Uldaman, Ulduar, and Uldum. Within these complexes, the Titans utilized the Forge of Wills to create endless subterranean workers made of unyielding stone and iron—the Earthen, the Mechagnomes, and the sea-faring Vrykul. These machines were programmed with a singular, eternal directive: to maintain the deep foundations of the earth, regulate the world's ley lines, and guard the prisons of the Old Gods.
To oversee the organic evolution of the surface world, the Great Titan Eonar blessed the massive proto-dragon champions who had aided the Keepers in defending the world. Infused with a portion of the Pantheon's own cosmic power, these creatures were transformed into the Dragon Aspects (Alexstrasza, Ysera, Malygos, Nozdormu, and Neltharion), tasked with safeguarding the domains of life, nature, magic, time, and the deep earth from any future corruption.
With their work complete, the Pantheon departed Azeroth, leaving the Keepers and the Watchers to maintain vigilance over the pristine machine they had constructed. However, this ancient ordering laid the groundwork for the modern world's greatest vulnerabilities. Over millennia, the imprisoned Old Gods leaked a subtle, psychic affliction known as the Curse of Flesh into the titan laboratories, systematically transforming the unyielding stone Earthen and iron Mechagnomes into soft, mortal, and mortal-minded creatures: modern dwarves, gnomes, and humans.
Currently, as the mortal champions of the Alliance and Horde fight their way through the Scourge in Northrend, the ancient layout of the Ordering of Azeroth is actively resurfacing. Within the titan city of Ulduar, the madness of the Old God Yogg-Saron is actively warping the ancient Keepers, threatening to undo the cosmic architecture laid down by the Pantheon millions of years ago, and forcing mortals to confront the terrifying, clockwork mechanisms of their own creation.
