The Scourge

Origins: The Blueprint of Death

The @Scourge is a monolithic, terrifying host of the @Undead that exists for a singular, cataclysmic purpose: to systematically strip Azeroth of all mortal life and reshape the planet into a unified monument of death. The faction’s origins lie not on Azeroth, but in the dark, manipulative machinations of the @Burning Legion. Following the demons' failure to conquer the world during the War of the Ancients and the Second War, Kil'jaeden the Deceiver conceived a new strategy. He sought to create a weapon that would eliminate the unpredictable variables of mortal free will, honor, and fear.

Kil'jaeden took the soul of the rebellious orcish Elder Shaman, Ner'zhul, and subjected him to agonizing, metaphysical torture. Ner'zhul’s soul was torn apart and remade into a singular, vast, and hyper-intelligent psychic entity: The Lich King. Imprisoned within a block of impenetrable, diamond-hard ice harvested from the deepest reaches of the Twisting Nether, Ner'zhul was cast down onto Azeroth, crashing into the frozen, desolate peaks of Northrend’s Icecrown Glacier. From this Frozen Throne, the Lich King was commanded to forge a plague that would weaken the mortal kingdoms before the grand invasion of the @Burning Legion.

The Plague of Un-death and the Cult of the Damned

From his icy prison, the Lich King expanded his vast telepathic consciousness outward, effortlessly dominating the local fauna of @Northrend, including the ice @Troll tribes and the arachnid crypt fiends of the subterranean Nerubian Empire. Once his hold on the continent was absolute, he reached across the Great Sea to the @Human kingdom of Lordaeron. Operating through psychic whispers, he targeted lonely, ambitious, or disenfranchised mortals, promising them forbidden magical knowledge, immense wealth, and functional immortality.

His most crucial convert was @Kel'Thuzad, a prominent archmage of the @Kirin Tor. Driven by a desperate ambition to study necromancy, @Kel'Thuzad traveled to @Northrend, pledged his soul to the Frozen Throne, and returned to Lordaeron to establish the Cult of the Damned. Operating as a subversive, underground religious movement, the Cult spent years infiltrating every level of human society, from simple granary workers to high-ranking nobles.

Together, the Lich King and @Kel'Thuzad perfected the Plague of Un-death. This highly toxic, magical pathogen was engineered to kill its host rapidly and immediately reanimate the corpse into a mindless, hyper-aggressive zombie completely bound to the Lich King’s mental commands. The Cult secretly laced the northern grain supplies of Lordaeron with the plague, turning the kingdom's own agricultural lifeblood into the vector of its absolute undoing.

The Fall of Lordaeron and the Ascent of the @Death Knight

The @Scourge officially transitioned from a covert bio-terrorist cell to a global military threat during the Third War. As the plague erupted across northern Lordaeron, transforming entire cities into sprawling hives of the walking dead, King Terenas Menethil dispatched his son and heir, Prince @Arthas Menethil, to contain the crisis. This played directly into the Lich King's grand design. Ner'zhul did not wish to serve the @Burning Legion forever; he sought a physical champion powerful enough to breach his icy prison and set him free.

Through a series of brilliantly orchestrated psychological manipulations, the @Scourge systematically drove @Arthas Menethil to absolute madness and despair. Desperate to save his people, @Arthas Menethil pursued the dreadlord Mal'Ganis to the frozen shores of Northrend, where he claimed the cursed, vampiric runeblade known as @Frostmourne. The moment @Arthas Menethil drew the sword, the blade devoured his soul, shattering his free will and transforming him into the premier @Death Knight of the @Scourge.

@Arthas Menethil returned to Lordaeron as a loyal servant of the Frozen Throne. In a matter of days, he murdered his father, overran the capital city, and turned the kingdom's massive standing armies into a fresh harvest of undead soldiers.

The Conquest of Quel'Thalas and Dalaran

With Lordaeron reduced to a smoking wasteland of ash and bone, the Scourge marched northeast toward the high elven @Kingdom of Quel'Thalas. The Lich King required a massive source of raw mystical power to resurrect @Kel'Thuzad, who had been killed by @Arthas Menethil prior to his corruption. Utilizing a massive, unstoppable vanguard of ghouls, skeletal warriors, and gargoyles, the @Scourge breached the @Blood Elf's ancient magical defenses, slaughtered the Ranger-General @Sylvanas Windrunner (reanimating her as the first banshee), and marched directly into the heart of Silvermoon.

@Arthas Menethil cast @Kel'Thuzad's remains into the sacred Sunwell, permanently corrupting the high elves' font of power and resurrecting the necromancer as a magnificent, immortal Lich. From there, the @Scourge marched upon the wizard-city of Dalaran, crushing its defensive wards and claiming the Book of Medivh. Armed with the spellbook, @Kel'Thuzad initiated a massive, complex ritual that summoned the demon lord Archimonde into Azeroth, marking the official arrival of the @Burning Legion.

The Civil War and the Frozen Throne

Following Archimonde's dramatic defeat at the Battle of Mount Hyjal, the @Scourge underwent a violent internal schism. The demon lord Kil'jaeden, furious over the Lich King's growing autonomy and hidden agendas, commanded @Illidan Stormrage to destroy the Frozen Throne using the Eye of Sargeras. Though @Illidan Stormrage's spell failed to completely shatter the throne, it cracked the icy prison, causing the Lich King’s psychic power to rapidly leak across the world.

This sudden psychic weakening allowed a significant faction of undead—led by the liberated @Sylvanas Windrunner—to permanently break free from the Hive Mind, christening themselves the @Forsaken and seizing control of the ruins of Lordaeron.

Desperate to save his master, @Arthas Menethilraced back to the frozen wastes of @Northrend, fighting through @Illidan Stormrage's @Naga and @Blood Elf forces at the base of the glacier. Scaling the pinnacle of the Frozen Throne alone, @Arthas Menethil used @Frostmourneto shatter the remaining ice. He donned the @The Helm of Domination, merging his mortal soul with the primordial spirit of Ner'zhul. The @Scourge was made whole once more under a singular, supreme god-king, who immediately entered a deep, multi-year slumber to heal his wounds and plan his final crusade against the living.

The Assault on Light's Hope Chapel

Upon his awakening, @Arthas Menethil sought to completely eliminate the final pockets of holy resistance remaining in the Eastern Plaguelands. Operating from the colossal, hovering necropolis @Acherus: The Ebon Hold, a newly raised vanguard of elite Death Knights led by Highlord @Darion Mograine launched a devastating siege against the Argent Dawn at Light's Hope Chapel.

The @Scourge brought thousands of ghouls, plague-spreaders, and gargoyles to overrun the sacred ground. However, the holy energy radiating from the catacombs beneath the chapel severely weakened the undead forces. At the climax of the battle, @Arthas Menethil materialized on the battlefield, callously revealing that he had sent @Darion Mograine and his @Death Knight soldiers on a deliberate suicide mission merely to draw out Highlord @Tirion Fordring.

This profound betrayal shattered the @Arthas Menethil's psychological hold over his death knights. @Darion Mograine threw the corrupted @Ashbringer to @Tirion Fordring, who purified the blade and used its immense, explosive Light energy to strike at the @Arthas Menethil. Severely wounded and forced to retreat back to the frozen north, @Arthas Menethil's absolute control over his elite vanguard was permanently broken. The surviving death knights broke away to form the @Knights of the Ebon Blade, marking the first major structural fracture in the @Scourge command hierarchy prior to the onset of the global @Northrend war.
