Located beneath the ruins of the historical Capital City of Lordaeron, the site originally consisted of vast, sprawling sewers, catacombs, and deep dungeons constructed by the human monarchs of Arathor and Lordaeron over centuries.
During the Third War, the fallen Prince @Arthas Menethil returned to his homeland, assassinated his father King Terenas Menethil, and unleashed the @Undead @Scourge to completely slaughter the kingdom's population. @Arthas Menethil briefly claimed the ruined palace, intending to expand the subterranean crypts into a grand capital for his own @Scourge vanguard.
The true founding of the Undercity occurred when the Lich King’s telepathic power faltered following the events of the Third War. Seizing this window of vulnerability, @Sylvanas Windrunner—the former Ranger-General of the @Kingdom of Quel'Thalas who had been raised as a banshee—rallied a massive host of free-willed @Undead.
@Sylvanas Windrunner orchestrated a brutal guerrilla war within the ruins of the capital, successfully driving the @Scourge forces led by the dreadlord Varimathras out of the kingdom. To secure her victory, she spared Varimathras after he pledged absolute fealty to her, utilizing his demonic strength to help cement her rule.
Sylvanas officially declared the free @Undeadto be the @Forsaken, claiming the sprawling subterranean network beneath the ruined palace as their sovereign capital and naming it the Undercity.
The Undercity is a grim, circular metropolis divided into distinct, specialized quarters flanking a central chamber, completely choked by toxic, glowing green slime channels and the smell of embalming fluid:
The Apothecary Quarter: The absolute scientific engine of the city. Here, the Royal Apothecary Society—under the direction of @Grand Apothecary Putress —conducts horrific biological and alchemical experiments, explicitly tasked by @Sylvanas Windrunner to secretly develop a new, hyper-lethal plague capable of wiping out both the @Scourge and the living world.
The Rogues' Quarter: The clandestine intelligence hub where the Deathstalkers coordinate espionage, assassination, and political subversion campaigns across the @Eastern Kingdoms
The Royal Quarter: The deepest chamber of the city, serving as the throne room where @Sylvanas Windrunner sits alongside her demonic advisor, Varimathras, directing the global survival policy of her people.
To guarantee the survival of her structurally fragile nation, @Sylvanas Windrunner utilized the diplomatic assistance of the @Tauren Archdruid Hamuul Runetotem to secure the @Forsaken a place within the New Horde.
While Warchief @Thrall accepted the @Forsaken out of a strategic desire to establish a Horde foothold in the @Eastern Kingdoms, the Undercity remains a place of deep, simmering distrust. @Orc emissaries and Kor'kron guards keep a paranoid watch over the city's gates, fully aware that the dark, alchemical machinations being brewed within the Apothecary Quarter could just as easily be turned against the Horde as they could against the Alliance.
