The modern age of Adlanthea did not arrive all at once.
It arrived in waves.
Fifty years ago, aether was valuable but difficult to refine, expensive to transport, and used mainly by scholars, wealthy households, and specialized magical institutions. Most cities still relied heavily on traditional spellcraft, steam power, horse-drawn transport, and older trade roads.
Then everything changed.
50 Years Ago: The Refinement Breakthrough
Aetheric researchers developed safer methods for refining and containing raw aether on an industrial scale.
What had once been a rare magical resource became commercially viable.
Factories began adapting aether engines. Rail experiments accelerated. Wealthy investors rushed to purchase mines, ley rights, crystal deposits, and refinement patents.
The modern industrial age began.
43 Years Ago: Rise of the Brass Consortium
Several powerful manufacturers, bankers, refinery owners, and inventors formed the Brass Consortium to coordinate trade, patents, transport, and industrial expansion.
Within a decade, the Consortium controlled major portions of Adlanthea’s manufacturing economy.
Old noble families initially dismissed the organization as wealthy merchants playing politics.
They stopped laughing when Consortium fortunes began rivaling their own.
38 Years Ago: The Great Rail Expansion
Aether-assisted railways began connecting the continent’s major population centers.
Crownspire, Emberholt, Vespera, and Ironveil became linked through increasingly reliable trade routes, reducing journeys of weeks to days.
Mining towns expanded almost overnight.
So did smuggling, railway robbery, industrial accidents, and territorial disputes.
Entire communities were displaced when new rail corridors crossed ancestral lands.
31 Years Ago: The Aerwyn Accords
Rapid advances in airship design transformed aerial travel from dangerous experimentation into commercial transportation.
Aerwyn Reach became the center of the emerging airship industry.
The Crowned Houses attempted to regulate air routes through licenses and docking charters, eventually leading to the Aerwyn Accords, which established formal aerial trade laws.
Many independent captains rejected those restrictions.
The networks that would eventually become the Free Skies grew considerably during this period.
27 Years Ago: The Emberholt Furnace Disaster
One of Emberholt’s largest experimental aether furnaces catastrophically ruptured.
Hundreds were killed.
Several surrounding districts remained magically unstable for years, and strange creatures were reported within the ruins.
The Brass Consortium blamed faulty construction.
The Aetheric Collegium blamed unsafe refinement practices.
Survivors blamed both.
Modern aether safety regulations largely trace their existence to the disaster.
22 Years Ago: Formation of the Modern Ironwatch
Growing industrial unrest, rail crime, magical accidents, and increasingly dangerous aether-related creatures forced Adlanthean authorities to reorganize their military and lawkeeping forces.
The modern Ironwatch emerged from that restructuring.
Firearms, armored rail transports, specialized construct-control equipment, and anti-magic devices became standard among elite units.
The organization quickly became one of the most powerful institutions on the continent.
18 Years Ago: The First Recorded Aether Wraith
Following an accident at a private laboratory near Vespera, investigators encountered what would later be classified as an Aether Wraith.
The Aetheric Collegium publicly described the event as an isolated magical anomaly.
Additional cases followed.
They are no longer described as isolated.
14 Years Ago: The Glassroot Awakening
The luminous crystalline structures beneath the Glassroot Cathedral suddenly brightened after centuries of relative dormancy.
The event lasted eleven days.
Nearby aether instruments failed, ley readings shifted dramatically, and several witnesses reported hearing low voices beneath the cathedral floor.
No accepted explanation has ever been published.
11 Years Ago: The Ashen Hand Emerges
A series of coordinated attacks destroyed several illegal refineries and experimental aether sites.
Those responsible identified themselves as the Ashen Hand.
Their manifestos claimed that industrial aether harvesting was destabilizing ancient magical systems beneath Adlanthea.
Governments and industrial leaders classified them as extremists and terrorists.
Their attacks have continued.
7 Years Ago: The Singing Rails Incident
An abandoned railway line unexpectedly reactivated despite having no connected power source.
Signal lamps illuminated.
Switches moved on their own.
Witnesses reported hearing an approaching train that never appeared.
Attempts to dismantle portions of the line resulted in severe magical disturbances.
The site is now commonly known as the Singing Rails.
3 Years Ago: The Ley Shift
Aetheric Collegium instruments across multiple cities recorded simultaneous changes in ley-current behavior.
The shifts were minor.
The fact that they occurred across hundreds of miles was not.
Publicly, the Collegium maintains that natural fluctuations are expected.
Privately, research into the phenomenon has intensified.
Present Day
Adlanthea has never been richer.
Its cities shine with aether light. Railways cross the continent. Airships fill the skies. Industry grows every year, and discoveries once considered impossible are becoming ordinary.
But machinery is failing in ways engineers cannot explain.
Aether-born creatures are becoming more common.
Ancient sites are reacting to modern extraction.
And beneath all the polished brass, velvet, smoke, and progress, one uncomfortable question is spreading:
What if Adlanthea did not discover aether?
What if it disturbed it?
