Adlanthea is a continent of invention, scholarship, and carefully documented progress.
It is also a continent where everyone knows at least one story they swear is true.
Rail workers leave coins beside certain abandoned tracks because some lines are said to remember the dead. Airship crews refuse to whistle beneath a docking mast after midnight. Factory workers occasionally mark machinery with old protective symbols, even when supervisors insist such practices are nonsense.
Among the most persistent rumors is that damaged aether equipment sometimes carries voices. Most engineers blame interference, residual spellwork, or mechanical failure. Others claim the voices occasionally answer questions.
Travelers near the Singing Rails report phantom signals, distant footsteps, and trains that can be heard approaching despite the line having been abandoned for years.
Pilgrims visiting Saint Vaelor’s Lantern leave ribbons, photographs, and possessions belonging to missing loved ones. Some swear the eternal flame burns brighter when the missing are still alive.
The Shattered Colossus inspires dozens of competing legends. Some say it was an ancient weapon. Others insist it was once alive. A few Collegium scholars quietly believe its construction predates every known civilization in Adlanthea.
The luminous roots beneath the Glassroot Cathedral are treated with reverence by some and fear by others. No one has conclusively determined where they lead.
In industrial cities, workers whisper about people disappearing after prolonged aether exposure, only to be seen days later standing near ley machinery with no memory of where they have been.
The Ashen Hand claims these stories are warnings.
The Aetheric Collegium calls most of them superstition.
Adlantheans generally prefer a third explanation:
Do not investigate strange noises after midnight unless you are being paid very well.
