The Silver River is the city's spine and its mirror, running east to west from the inland hills to the sea at Aetherbridge's western edge. On the city map, north is at the top and west is to the left; the river crosses the map from right to left, and the three bridges span its banks at western, central, and eastern crossings. Tidegate sits at the western river mouth. In its calm the river reflects the institutions along its banks — the university, the stadium, the civic towers — and in doing so it seems to endorse them; but the water is indifferent, and what it truly carries is the city's runoff, its history, its small drownings.
The **Western Bridge** is the oldest, a weathered concrete-and-steel crossing between Riverbridge District and Dawnridge. Freight moving from Ironvale and Tidegate uses the city's west-side road network to reach the docks, but the bridge itself is a commuter and local-traffic route, not a direct crossing from either district. Salt air from the nearby estuary gnaws at its metalwork, and it is perpetually under maintenance. Its vendors and patched railings give it a practical, unromantic character.
The **Middle Bridge** is the city's showpiece, a sturdy concrete crossing with recessed lights and fish-and-academic relief panels, connecting Riverbridge District with Ironvale. Commuters and students crowd it at the bookends of the day; on weekends it is a promenade where the city displays itself at its most composed. It is the bridge of reputations — the one under which the city's official portrait of itself is most often photographed.
The **Eastern Bridge** is the quietest crossing, connecting Riverbridge District with the wooded Northveil area. It carries local traffic, school buses, delivery vans, hikers, and families moving between the city and the forest-edge roads. It has no lights worth mentioning and no official charm; it is simply there, dependable, the bridge the rest of the city forgets — and, perhaps not coincidentally, the one a person walking at odd hours is least likely to be watched upon.
Seen together, the three bridges tell the truth about Aetherbridge: the freight and salt air of the west, the polished civic center, and the quiet forest-edge routes to the east, bound by a river that runs through them all.
