  1. Sorta kinda Rick and Morty!!!
  2. Lore

Mr. Poopybutthole

Mr. Poopybutthole is perhaps the most enigmatic character in the series. Originally introduced as a "longtime family friend" in the Season 2 episode "Total Rickall," his lore has shifted from a meta-joke about TV tropes into a tragic, multi-season story of a man whose life falls apart after meeting the Smiths.

Here’s the breakdown of his tragic lore:

  • The "Total Rickall" Mystery: In his debut, the Smith house is infested with alien parasites that implant fake happy memories. Viewers assumed Mr. Poopybutthole was a parasite because he appeared out of nowhere. However, in a shocking twist, Beth shoots him, and he doesn't transform back into a parasite—proving he was a real person the family (and the audience) had simply never seen before.

  • The Downward Spiral: After being shot by Beth, he undergoes a grueling recovery. He becomes addicted to pain medication, loses his job as a professor, and eventually loses his wife, Amy, and their son. This transformation from a happy, "Ooh-wee!" shouting character to a depressed, bearded man is one of the show's darkest running gags.

  • The Fourth Wall: He serves as the unofficial narrator of the series, often appearing in post-credits scenes to talk directly to the audience about how much time has passed between seasons and asking how our lives are going.

  • A "New" Start: By Season 7, he has hit rock bottom, even hiring Rick’s "Number One" to try and fix his life. He eventually attempts to replace a version of himself in another dimension (similar to what Rick and Morty do), but he finds that even a "perfect" version of his life comes with its own miseries.

  • Species Theories: Because he looks like the Eyehole Man and Noob-Noob, many fans believe he belongs to a specific alien species that is naturally resilient and cheerful, though his trauma has clearly broken that mold.
