Unity is an intergalactic hivemind and one of the few beings in the multiverse that Rick Sanchez has genuinely loved. First appearing in the Season 2 episode "Auto Erotic Assimilation", Unity is characterized by their ability to assimilate entire populations, connecting every host to a single consciousness.
Key highlights of Unity’s lore include:
The Hivemind Nature: Unity spreads their consciousness by having a host vomit into the mouth of an unassimilated individual. Once connected, every person on a planet shares the same mind, memories, and personality. Unity views individual, unassimilated beings as "single-minded".
Relationship with Rick: Rick and Unity dated when Unity was just "the population of a small town". They have a deeply toxic, codependent dynamic; when they are together, they party so intensely that they both lose control—Rick emotionally, and Unity over their hosts.
The Breakup and Rick’s Despair: At the end of their Season 2 encounter, Unity leaves Rick after realizing he is a destructive influence that prevents them from growing. This leads to one of the show's darkest moments: Rick’s unsuccessful suicide attempt after reading Unity’s breakup notes.
Season 7 Return: Unity returned in the episode "Air Force Wong" because they were worried about Rick's obsession with Rick Prime. They briefly possessed the entire population of Virginia just to get Rick's attention and warn him that his quest for revenge was destroying him.
Gender and Appearance: As a hivemind, Unity is essentially genderless and can take any form, using both male and female avatars to interact with Rick. However, they most often inhabit a purple-haired female host voiced by Christina Hendricks.
Ambitions: Unity’s original goal was to become "what the single-minded once called a god" by joining the Galactic Federation and eventually assimilating the entire universe into a single, peaceful entity.
