Arcadia (The Material Plane)

📜 The Historical Ages of Arcadia

I. The Golden Age: The Ascendancy and the Cataclysm

Arcadia’s earliest known era, the Golden Age, was characterized by unparalleled magical achievement and a powerful connection to the surrounding planes of existence. Arcadians, primarily led by the Elven populace, mastered raw arcane energies, culminating in the creation of the Rune Gates. These massive, stable portals bridged Arcadia directly with the Fey Realm, ushering in an era of prosperous interplanar exchange. However, this mastery proved to be catastrophic. The blatant violation of planar boundaries drew the attention of the ultimate cosmic threat: The Void (also known as The Abyss or Oblivion). Driven by an insatiable desire to corrupt and assimilate all life, the Eldritch entities of the Void poured through the Rune Gates, initiating a great cataclysm. This invasion shattered the world’s structure, corrupted the land, and permanently severed the connection to the Fey Realm, leaving the remaining Fey trapped on the material plane. The ensuing devastation brought the Golden Age to a sudden, violent close.

II. The Dark Age: Blame, Bloodshed, and Consolidation

The aftermath of the Cataclysm plunged Arcadia into a long, brutal Dark Age. With the world reduced to the hostile Ashen Expanse and the true, cosmic cause of the disaster forgotten, surviving humanity sought a tangible scapegoat. Blame fell squarely on the Elves, whose magical prowess was linked to the defunct Rune Gates. A zealous leader, the human noble Lucius Lightblood, rose to power, claiming direct lineage from the champion chosen by the Dawn Mother (the Goddess of Light and Purification). Under his banner, humanity launched The Great Cleansing, a zealous campaign seeking to eradicate all Elves from Arcadia. This era was defined by genocide and fanaticism. As the Elves were systematically hunted to extinction, the Lightblood dynasty consolidated control, organizing the scattered survivors and initiating the monumental task of constructing the massive, walled City-State, which became humanity's final refuge against the ruined world.

III. The Industrial Age: Technology, Hierarchy, and Amnesia

The modern Industrial Age represents a new, pragmatic form of civilization built atop the ruins and the blood of the past. The City-State is now a sprawling, multi-ringed metropolis, powered not by raw magic, but by the fusion of technology and refined magical energy. This Aether-Tech, driven by crystalline Aetherium mined from the Ashen Expanse, allows for steampunk-esque marvels like airships, mechanized constructs, and advanced weaponry.

Society, however, is rigidly stratified. Rule is maintained by the Lightblood Royal Family from the central Core, supported by the Six Noble Houses who control every facet of the economy, military, and law from the Platinum Ring. The few remaining remnants of the Cataclysm's tragedy—the Half-Elves and trapped Fey-folk—are relegated to the squalor of the outer rings, serving as a permanent underclass.

Crucially, the existential threat of the Void is all but forgotten. The Inquisitors, originally founded to combat Eldritch corruption, now serve as a powerful, zealous police force, often targeting the city's underclass and those practicing unsanctioned magic. Arcadia now stands at the height of its mechanical power, secure within its walls, yet built upon a foundation of ancient fear and modern inequity, tragically unaware that the horror which once destroyed their world is simply waiting in the eternal silence of the forgotten Void.
