The Iron Mountains are a massive, jagged mountain range that anchors the southwestern edge of the Arcadian supercontinent. They form a natural, rugged border, with the great peaks running directly along the western coastline.
The range is characterized by immense, rugged peaks and deep, unforgiving canyons. Its mineral-rich composition gives rise to its name, signifying the presence of iron and other valuable metals. The stability of the mountains is unique in the shattered world, having largely avoided the direct, chaotic energy that affected the surrounding lands.
Geographical Rims: To the west, the mountains drop steeply into the ocean. To the north, they transition abruptly into the flat, dangerous ash dunes of the Ashen Expanse. To the east, lies the cursed Whisperwood Forest.
The mountains are the ancestral territory and preferred haven for several—though not all—of the nomadic Ashlander Tribes. These tribes utilize the unique geography for survival:
Safety and Shelter: The mountains offer reliable shelter from the ubiquitous sandstorms of the Expanse and provide strategic protection from the largest predators, such as the colossal Ashen Wurm.
Contested Ground: The Ashlander tribes view the Iron Mountains as sacred ground, an enduring sanctuary against the destruction that claimed the rest of Arcadia.
The untapped mineral wealth and the strategic position of the mountains set the region up for inevitable conflict with the powerful city of Sol Invictus.
Mining Dispute: Any mining operation initiated by House Thorne or House Veridian within the mountains is viewed by the Ashlanders as a profound desecration of their home. Unlike the open desert, where Ashlanders might tolerate passage, in the mountains, they organize and actively resist, viewing the mining activity as an attempt by the decadent City-State to exploit and ruin the last stable sanctuary left in the world.
Strategic Barrier: The range acts as a military obstacle. The narrow passes and high peaks are impossible for General Valeria Vane's airships and ground troops to effectively control, giving the Ashlander tribes a significant defensive advantage against any encroachment from Sol Invictus.
