The Unified Kingdom

@The Unified Kingdom (or UK for short) is the largest and also the most technologically and industrially advanced country on the continent of @Arcanum, in the setting's present day.

The capital of @The Unified Kingdom is @tarant, the largest and most industrialised metropolis of the entire continent. Due to its sheer size, the country is inhabited by almost all the races typical of @Arcanum, the most common of these being @Humans, @Half-Elf, @Half‑Orc, @Dwarf, @Gnomes, @Halflings, and to a lesser extent, @Elf, @Half-Ogres and @Orcs.

Despite its name, it is technically not a monarchy anymore, as the constitutional monarch was ousted some years before the events of the game's storyline. @The Unified Kingdom is run as a de facto republic, though its official name has been kept out of tradition. One of the most powerful governmental bodies in @The Unified Kingdom is the @Industrial Council.

@The Unified Kingdom has the most advanced rail network in the known world. Its early adoption of the steam engine, as well as innovations in firearms and military tactics, have made it a formiddable foe to the other countries and polities of @Arcanum.

Several decades before the beginning of the game's storyline, during the period of the Great Wars between the @The Unified Kingdom and the smaller @The Kingdom of Cumbria to the south, the @The Unified Kingdom scored a series of devastating military victories on the more traditionalist @The Kingdom of Cumbria, greatly decimating its armies and nobility and even annexing some of its northern territories. Since then, @The Kingdom of Cumbria has fallen into severe socio-economic decline. The bitter legacy of the wars between the two states and Cumbria's defeat fuels the Cumbrian monarchy's continued resentment towards any modern technology.

Though @The Unified Kingdom is on the surface politically and militarily powerful and economically prosperous, the player character can discover the country is often rife with corruption and shady political scheming. The industrial revolution also deepened the inequality of Arcanum's races and social classes, especially in the big cities, and this is causing a growing sense of tension.

Cities

  • Tarant (capital)

    • Tarant is the largest and most technologically advanced city on the continent of @Arcanum. It is the capital of @The Unified Kingdom.

      The city is most populated by @Humans, although other races such as @Gnomes and @Orcs can be commonly found as well. Racism is rampant in Tarant, with most of the orcish population being used for labor in the rapidly developing factories or forced to live in the lower ranks of society, specifically in the gang governed slums of Tarant known collectively as @The Boil.

      Located east of the @Stonewall Range and west of @Ashbury 123 with an easy access to sea, Tarant enjoys quite a few economical opportunities, which have allowed it to prosper industrially. It is implied that the city has trade routes with @caladon, @Black Root, and Ashbury, among others.

      The famous inventor of the steam engine @Gilbert Bates lives in Tarant, and can be located in his mansion (@Bates Mansion).

  • @Ashbury 123

    • @Ashbury 123 is a large coastal town in @The Unified Kingdom, on the distant east coast of the @Morbihan Plains. It has both railway and ship connections to the surrounding world.

  • @Stillwater

    • The town is located at. You can first hear about Stillwater in @Joachim's telegram to Virgil in Tarant. It is also mentioned in an edition of the Tarantian newspaper, and by @H. T. Parnell in reference to a display in his museum of curiosities (@H. T. Parnell's Museum of Curiosities). @Stillwater can be easily forced by heading to its coordinates, as it provides a useful base of operations for exploring the @Black Mountain Mines. The site will marked automatically on your map after an encounter with King @Loghaire Thunder Stone of the @Wheel Clan.

  • @Shrouded Hills

    • @Shrouded Hills is a small mining town east of the @Stonewall Range, south-west of Tarant and north-west of @Dernholm. It is well-known for the @Bessie Toone's Mine and its agriculture, where a majority of the towns production comes from. It is also a part of @The Unified Kingdom, and is governed by Constable Owens. The town is primitive in that it has been barely touched by either magick or technology.

  • @Black Root (annexed from @The Kingdom of Cumbria after the Great Wars)

    • @Black Root is a port city located on the south coast of @Arcanum, east of the @Stonewall Range and north of @Dernholm, situated on the eastern edge of @The Kingdom of Cumbria.
