The Painted Maw

If the Painted Maw sees the party and decides to attack, give the party the following description and monologue rather than creating one. The roll for Initiative.

Monologue

The Painted Maw steps forward, its feet making no sound on the warped boards.

It claps once — a sharp, echoing crack — and the music stops.
The creature bows with exaggerated flourish, its head nearly touching the ground before snapping upright.

“Ladies… gentlemen… delicious in-betweens…”
Its voice is a chorus of whispers layered over a carnival barker’s cheer.
“Welcome to the show.”

It gestures broadly to the ruined fairground.

“You’ve wandered so far from the safety of your little stories. Heroes, adventurers, seekers of truth — oh, I love your type. You always taste of hope and fear in just the right proportions.”

It tilts its head, the painted grin widening.

“Do you like my playground? I made it just for you. Every ride a memory, every shadow a secret, every scream…”

It inhales deeply, shuddering with delight.
“…a masterpiece.”

The lights around you flicker violently, colours bleeding into one another like wet paint.

“But enough foreplay. You didn’t come here for a tour. You came for a fight, didn’t you? To slay the monster, save the day, and pat yourselves on the back.”

It leans forward, impossibly close without having moved.

“Let me spoil the ending.”

The grin splits wider, revealing a spiralling abyss of teeth and colour.

“This is the part where the heroes scream.”
