Customs & Daily Life

Customs & Daily Life

Daily life in Ash & Acre revolves around work, family, community, seasons, and survival. Most people live ordinary lives, and days may pass without violence, adventure, or major events.

Daily Routine

People generally rise around daylight and organize their activities around available sunlight, weather, season, and occupation.

Farmers tend crops and animals. Craftspeople open workshops. Merchants prepare stalls and goods. Servants perform household duties. Guards begin watches. Laborers seek or continue paid work.

Evenings are commonly spent eating, repairing equipment, completing household tasks, socializing, drinking, praying, or resting.

Artificial lighting is limited and costs resources, so activity usually decreases after dark.

Work

Work occupies much of ordinary life.

Most people cannot simply abandon their occupation for days to pursue adventures. Crops require tending, animals require feeding, workshops have customers, merchants have businesses, and households have responsibilities.

Missing work can mean lost wages, angry employers, unfinished orders, neglected property, or financial hardship.

Meals

Most people eat simple food based on what is locally available and affordable.

Meals vary according to wealth, season, harvest quality, occupation, and region. Bread, grains, vegetables, legumes, dairy products, preserved foods, and locally available meat or fish are common possibilities.

Large feasts and expensive foods are associated with wealth, celebrations, religious observances, or special occasions.

Community

Villages and neighborhoods are interconnected communities.

People recognize neighbors, coworkers, customers, local officials, regular travelers, and families who have lived nearby for generations.

News, gossip, arguments, marriages, deaths, crimes, unusual visitors, and changes in fortune can quickly become subjects of conversation.

Reputation therefore matters.

Hospitality

Travelers may find lodging at inns, religious establishments, private homes, barns, camps, or roadside shelters depending on location and circumstances.

Hospitality is not guaranteed. Strangers may be treated cautiously, particularly during shortages, disease, war, or periods of increased crime.

Markets

Markets are important social and economic events.

People gather to buy necessities, sell produce and crafts, seek employment, hear news, meet acquaintances, negotiate agreements, and exchange gossip.

Larger settlements generally offer a wider variety of goods and services than small villages.

Entertainment

Ordinary people still seek enjoyment.

Music, storytelling, drinking, games, dancing, festivals, competitions, communal meals, religious celebrations, hunting, gossip, and gatherings provide relief from work.

Entertainment varies by region and social class.

Privacy

Modern expectations of privacy do not always apply.

Homes may be crowded. Families often share sleeping and working spaces. Inns may have communal rooms. Servants may constantly be present in wealthy households.

In small communities, keeping activities completely secret can be difficult.

Clothing & Appearance

Clothing reflects occupation, wealth, climate, local custom, and social standing.

Most people own relatively limited wardrobes and repair clothing rather than casually replacing it.

Fine fabrics, elaborate decoration, expensive dyes, jewelry, and expertly made clothing can signal wealth or status.

Ordinary Life Matters

Not every day needs a dramatic event.

A day spent harvesting crops, repairing a roof, practicing a trade, sharing a meal, visiting a market, talking with neighbors, courting someone, drinking at an inn, or simply resting is a meaningful part of life.

Ash & Acre should allow quiet periods and routines to exist alongside hardship, opportunity, conflict, and major historical events.
