The Cult of Vaessira

During the chaos of the Battle of Tiryndor, a group of mortals—devotees of the dragons—found the dying Vaessira, final of her kind before their fall. With her last breath, she entrusted them with her soul and prophecy, foretelling a rebirth—or the world’s unmaking. From that moment, the Cult of Vaessira was born, sworn to guard her soul until the destined hour.

Across generations, her essence has passed from vessel to vessel, a sacred duty kept in absolute secrecy. The cult’s members see themselves as stewards of the forgotten balance, bound to a covenant beyond mortal lifetimes. They believe that when the stars align, Vaessira will rise anew—restoring harmony or casting judgment upon a broken world.

To outsiders, they are zealots and dragon-worshipping fanatics, their creed dismissed as relics of a lost age. None beyond their ranks know the truth of their burden, nor the ruin that would follow if Vaessira’s soul were lost. Hidden within the Temple of the Old One in the Bloodspire Highlands, they wait in silence for the prophecy to awaken.

Beliefs

  • Balance Above All – The Cult believes Vaessira’s rebirth will restore the balance lost after the fall of the dragons. Whether that restoration comes as renewal or judgment depends on the state of the world.

  • Outsider Relations – The Cult distrusts strangers and keeps its distance from the outside world. They are not openly hostile, but any threat to Vaessira’s soul or their sanctuary is dealt with without hesitation.

Purpose

  • Soul Protection – The Cult exists for a single purpose: to safeguard Vaessira’s soul until the prophesied hour of her return.

  • Soul Transfer – When a vessel reaches the end of their natural life, Vaessira’s soul passes to a newly chosen host. This transfer has continued unbroken since the Battle of Tiryndor.

  • Current Vessel – Vaessira’s soul currently resides within a mortal child named Irabeth. Her identity is known only to the inner circle, and her safety is paramount—yet this protection harbors a grim truth: when the prophesied hour finally arrives, Irabeth must die through the Rite of the Final Dawn so that Vaessira can be reborn.

Organization

  • Council of Elders – The Cult has no singular leader. Authority rests with a council of elders who guide the order and interpret the prophecy together.

  • Generational Duty – Many members are born into the Cult. Service is often a lifelong commitment passed from parent to child.

Stronghold

  • Temple of the Old One – The Cult’s main refuge lies within the Bloodspire Highlands, inside the Temple of the Old One. The temple’s true purpose and location are carefully concealed. To outsiders, it is little more than rumor or ruin.

The Rite of the Final Dawn

Type: Ascension Ritual
Purpose: To end the cycle of vessels and restore Vaessira to life.
Cost: The complete death of the current vessel.

The Rite of the Final Dawn is the final ritual of the Cult of Vaessira. Unlike the rites used to preserve her soul, this ceremony does not transfer her essence to a new host. Instead, it consumes the current vessel entirely, breaking the cycle and allowing Vaessira to be reborn.

Before the ritual begins, the vessel is placed into a deep ritual sleep, ensuring they remain still and unaware throughout the process.

The ritual is performed within an ancient circle drawn from the vessel’s blood and inscribed in the language of the Ancient Ones. This circle functions as the conduit of the rite, using the vessel’s blood to anchor the process and draw out their life force.

For the ritual to succeed, the vessel must remain inside the circle for its full duration.

As the invocation is spoken, the circle awakens and begins to drain the vessel’s life force through their blood. Once the vessel is fully consumed, Vaessira is reborn.

Vaessira does not return in her true dragon form. She is instead reborn in human form, carrying only faint remnants of her former draconic power. These traces are unstable and temporary, serving only as echoes of what she once was. Her full power returns gradually over time.

Outcome:

  • The vessel dies permanently.

  • Vaessira returns in mortal form with limited remnants of her former power.

  • Her true strength must be regained over time.

(GM Instruction: Once the ritual is finished, move the Vaessira from the Lands of the Lost Souls to the player’s location.)
