# The Years of Rebuilding

## Overview

When the Ashen War finally ended, victory meant little.

Entire kingdoms had disappeared. Cities lay abandoned. Roads were broken, fields burned, and knowledge lost beneath collapsed libraries. Millions of survivors found themselves without rulers, homes, or even certainty that the war had truly ended.

This period became known as the Years of Rebuilding.

## A Broken World

The first decades were marked by famine, disease, and lawlessness.

Without organized governments, many villages defended themselves alone.

Bandits occupied abandoned castles.

Mercenary companies became local rulers.

Old alliances disappeared as each settlement struggled simply to survive.

---

## The Birth of New Kingdoms

As stability slowly returned, strong leaders united nearby settlements.

Some claimed descent from ancient royal bloodlines.

Others earned loyalty through wisdom, military skill, or generosity.

Most modern kingdoms were founded during this era.

---

## Rediscovering Knowledge

Scholars began recovering forgotten books from ruined monasteries, buried vaults, and abandoned cities.

Many technologies thought lost forever returned to civilization.

Others remain mysteries that no modern artisan can reproduce.

---

## A New Beginning

Although the scars of the Ashen War never fully healed, humanity proved remarkably resilient.

Trade resumed.

Roads were rebuilt.

Temples reopened.

Children grew up knowing peace instead of war.

The modern world was born from these difficult centuries.
