State of the World

The Death of Arthur

The age of chivalry ended at Camlann, where King Arthur fell. Some say he was slain by his traitor-son Mordred, pierced by a black spear. Others whisper that Arthur did not die, but was borne across the waves to Avalon, to return when Albion’s need is greatest. His passing left the land leaderless, and the Round Table shattered into rival knightly orders.

🌊 The Silence of the Lady

Once, Nimue, the Lady of the Lake, blessed kings and knights alike. Her hand bestowed Excalibur and the sacred waters of Avalon bound the realm together. But since Arthur’s fall, the Lady has vanished — no vision, no voice, no miracle. Without her, holy waters have grown still, and even the Grail itself is contested, claimed by zealots, heretics, and betrayers alike.

🏰 The Shattered Duchies of Briton

Albion is no kingdom now, but a patchwork of realms, each ruled by blade and banner:

  • Dominion of the Holy Grail

    • Duchies of Glannor, Dunyra, and Kiltyrin

    • Ruled by Queen Guinevere, who has turned her grief into faith. She rules as the Grail’s High Regent, blending courtly grace with fervent devotion. Knights here march under banners of silver chalices and burning candles, crusading to “purify” Albion.

  • Pendryn

    • A staunch duchy ruled by Sir Pendraic, one of the last true knights of the Round Table. His lands are poor and beset, yet his honor is unbroken. Pendryn is seen as the last bastion of “old Albion,” where chivalry still means more than power.

  • Gaughan

    • Ruled by Sir Gawain, famed for his might and loyalty. Gaughan is rich in rolling green hills, forests, and farms. Though loyal to Arthur’s memory, Gawain rules with pragmatism, guarding his people against both fae and Mordredian threat.

  • The Mordredian Dominion

    • Duchies of Rannoch, Leath, Fidlarig, and Maudlow

    • Ruled by Mordred, who styles himself “High King in the West.” His lands are dark and cruel, filled with broken oaths, Black Grail Knights, and iron keeps. His vassals are bound by fear, yet many ambitious lords flock to his banner, believing Mordred the true heir.

🌑 An Age of Fracture

With Arthur gone and the Lady silent, Albion is unmoored. Knightly orders feud, duchies war, and fae courts creep further into mortal lands. The Grail is both beacon and curse — a relic of hope to some, a weapon to others. All wait for a sign: will Albion be healed, or will it fall into shadow forever?
