01. Welcome to Avelora

Avelora is a high-fantasy kingdom built among the peaks, valleys and plateaus of an enormous mountain range rising far above an endless sea of clouds. The mountains are not floating islands; they are part of the land itself, continuing downward through the clouds toward a world far below that the people of Avelora neither visit nor consider part of their everyday lives.

For generations, the people of Avelora have lived entirely above the clouds. Cities, villages, forests, rivers, lakes, farmland and ancient ruins can all be found across the high mountain regions. Some settlements stand upon broad green plateaus, while others lie within sheltered valleys, dense forests or among rugged peaks. Water flows through the highlands in streams and rivers, sometimes reaching the mountain edges and disappearing into the cloud sea as enormous waterfalls.

What lies beneath the clouds is largely irrelevant to ordinary life in Avelora. The people do not travel down through the cloud layer, and journeys into the land below are not part of normal exploration, trade or travel. To most inhabitants, the world they know is the mountains above the clouds. The cloud sea marks the distant lower boundary of their lives, while roads, bridges and skies connect everything that matters to them.

Avelora is a compact kingdom ruled from its capital, Elvarin, by Queen Erlynn, a High Elf. The Crown governs the kingdom as a whole, while smaller cities are overseen by mayors and villages often rely upon local leaders or elders. Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Halflings, Dragonborn, Tieflings, Half-Orcs and other peoples live throughout the kingdom, and no settlement belongs exclusively to one race.

Magic is an accepted part of life in Avelora. Wizards, clerics, enchanted objects, magical creatures and unusual phenomena exist alongside farmers, merchants, craftsmen, innkeepers and ordinary families. Some people devote their lives to studying magic, while others may rarely use it at all. Magic can be powerful and mysterious, but it is not unusual enough to be considered unbelievable.

There are no horses in Avelora. They are not used for riding, farming, transport or travel because horses simply do not exist within the kingdom. Instead, Avelora is famous for its griffins.

Griffins serve as the kingdom’s primary flying mounts. Trained griffins carry riders between settlements, transport messages and allow travelers to cross difficult stretches of mountain terrain. Griffin posts, stables and aeries can be found throughout Avelora, particularly near cities and established travel routes. Skilled keepers care for trained griffins, while wild populations nest among remote cliffs and mountain peaks.

Not everyone owns or rides a griffin. Most people still travel on foot when moving locally, and roads and enormous ancient stone bridges remain essential to life and trade. Merchants transport goods along established routes, travelers cross bridges between mountain regions, and villages depend upon these connections. Griffins provide another way to travel rather than replacing roads entirely.

The relationship between Avelora and its griffins is old and deeply rooted in the kingdom’s culture. Riders are taught to respect the creatures rather than treat them simply as animals of burden. Some communities, particularly those near wild nesting grounds, have spent generations learning their behavior and protecting the places where they breed.

Avelora itself is a bright and beautiful land. Green valleys stretch between rocky peaks, forests grow across sheltered slopes, flowers cover alpine meadows and clear rivers wind between settlements. Great stone bridges cross deep cloud-filled gaps between mountain ridges, while distant peaks rise like islands from the white cloud sea even though they remain connected to the mountains far below.

Elvarin is the kingdom’s capital and largest city, serving as the center of royal rule, trade, knowledge and magic. Lunara is smaller and quieter, known for its gardens, flowering terraces and peaceful community. Thalorin stands among the remains of much older settlements and attracts scholars, historians and adventurers interested in Avelora’s past.

Beyond the cities are smaller communities such as Elaris, hidden among great forest trees; Aerwyn, built high among rugged peaks near wild griffin nesting grounds; Rendale, divided by a broad river that eventually plunges into the clouds; and Lyndale, a fertile valley village known for its gardens, medicinal plants and healers.

Between these settlements lie forests, mountain paths, ruins, caves, abandoned structures and places whose stories have been forgotten. Travelers may encounter unusual creatures, ancient magic, hidden treasures or simply people living their lives far from the larger cities.

Avelora is not a world defined by darkness or constant catastrophe. It is a living kingdom filled with ordinary people, beautiful places, humor, celebrations, friendships and everyday life. Danger and mystery still exist beyond familiar roads, and ancient places may hold secrets waiting to be discovered, but wonder is just as important as danger.

For an adventurer, Avelora is a world of open skies and distant horizons. Follow an old mountain road, cross a bridge above the clouds, explore forgotten ruins, visit a village festival, study magic, help someone in need or climb onto the back of a griffin and take to the skies.

Whatever waits beyond the next mountain, the clouds are always below.
