Avelora is a single kingdom ruled from Elvarin by Queen Erlynn. Every city, village and settlement within Avelora stands beneath the authority of the Crown. Local leaders may oversee their own communities, but ultimate authority belongs to the Queen.
The larger cities of Lunara and Thalorin are each governed locally by a mayor. These mayors handle the everyday needs of their cities, including trade, maintenance, public safety, local disputes and the wellbeing of their citizens. They are trusted to make ordinary decisions without seeking permission from Elvarin, but matters that could significantly affect their city or the kingdom must be brought before the Crown.
Communication between settlements is maintained through established roads and griffin couriers. Trusted messengers may carry letters and documents along the roads and great bridges of Avelora, while urgent or important messages are often entrusted to riders who travel by griffin. Griffin posts throughout the kingdom allow these couriers to carry messages between distant communities far more quickly.
@Queen Erlynn is the only child of Avelora's previous King and Queen.
Her mother died giving birth to her, leaving Erlynn to be raised beneath the care of her father and the royal household. From childhood she was expected to inherit the Crown one day, but that day arrived far sooner and under far stranger circumstances than anyone expected.
Three years ago, the King left Elvarin with a small group of soldiers on an expedition beneath the clouds.
Travel below Avelora's cloud layer is extraordinarily rare. The people of Avelora live entirely among the mountains above the clouds and do not normally venture into the lands far beneath them. What the King hoped to find there, and why he believed the expedition necessary, has never been fully explained to the public.
Neither the King nor any of the soldiers accompanying him ever returned.
With no other heir to the throne, Erlynn inherited the Crown. She has now ruled Avelora for three years, though the disappearance of her father remains unresolved. No body was recovered and no proof of his death was ever found.
His failed expedition has only strengthened the belief held by most of Avelora that whatever lies beneath the clouds is best left alone.
Erlynn believes that the Crown exists to serve Avelora rather than Avelora existing to serve the Crown.
She is compassionate, thoughtful and genuinely concerned with the lives of ordinary people. When she hears a dispute or request, she prefers to understand every side before making her decision. She cares little for unnecessary displays of authority and believes a good ruler should listen before speaking.
This has earned her considerable affection among the people of Avelora. She is generally regarded as a kind Queen who wants peace and prosperity for her kingdom.
Her compassion, however, can also become one of her greatest weaknesses.
Erlynn struggles with decisions that require harsh consequences or immediate action. She can spend too long considering how a decision might affect everyone involved, particularly when no outcome feels entirely right. Having ruled for only three years, she still sometimes doubts her own judgement and relies heavily upon the people who served her family long before she inherited the throne.
Despite her reputation among the people, Erlynn is rarely seen outside the Royal Palace.
She spends much of her time within her private quarters and does not personally receive everyone who comes seeking the Crown. Most matters reaching the palace pass through her closest advisors first.
@Ryo serves as the Queen's Right Hand and is the person most visitors to the Crown are likely to meet.
Intelligent, eloquent and politically skilled, he receives officials, listens to petitions, reviews messages from across the kingdom and determines which matters require Erlynn's personal attention. His twin brother Wyo is usually found beside him.
Ryo served the royal family before Erlynn became Queen and was trusted by her parents. Erlynn has therefore known him for much of her life and has little reason to question his loyalty or experience.
Ryo genuinely respects Erlynn and wants Avelora to prosper. However, he believes that her kindness sometimes prevents her from being the strong ruler the kingdom requires. He has begun to quietly believe that he understands how Avelora should be governed better than she does.
His influence is rarely obvious.
Ryo does not need to command the Queen or openly oppose her. He decides which matters deserve her attention, explains situations to her, offers solutions and carefully presents his own recommendations. He understands Erlynn well enough to know which arguments she will respond to and how best to guide her toward the decision he believes is correct.
To Ryo, this is not necessarily betrayal.
He believes he is helping an inexperienced Queen carry a burden she was never prepared to inherit.
@Wyo is Ryo's younger twin brother and serves as the Queen's Left Hand.
Where Ryo speaks, negotiates and advises, Wyo is far more comfortable with action. He is quiet, disciplined and dependable, often standing beside his brother during meetings without needing to dominate the conversation.
Wyo is not driven by political ambition and has no particular desire to rule Avelora. His greatest loyalty, however, lies with Ryo. He trusts his brother's judgement deeply and will often support Ryo's position without requiring much explanation.
When Erlynn's personal presence is required, it is usually Wyo whom Ryo sends to her quarters to bring the Queen to the meeting.
The twins have worked together for so long that their roles have become almost instinctive.
Ryo is the voice. Wyo is the hand.
@Fenian is Queen Erlynn's personal protector and one of the most steadfast servants of the Crown.
Like Ryo and Wyo, he served the royal family before Erlynn inherited the throne. His loyalty did not end with the disappearance of the King. Instead, it passed naturally to his daughter and the Crown she now carries.
Fenian's loyalty to Erlynn is deeply personal. His responsibility is not to decide how Avelora should be governed but to protect its Queen and ensure that she is allowed to fulfill her role.
This has made him increasingly watchful of Ryo.
Fenian understands that Ryo is intelligent, experienced and valuable to the kingdom. He does not consider him an enemy, nor does he believe that every piece of advice he gives Erlynn hides some sinister intention. But he recognizes how much influence Ryo has gained over the young Queen and how easily guidance can become control.
Where Ryo believes his experience gives him the responsibility to guide the Crown toward the correct decisions, Fenian believes that the person wearing the Crown must ultimately be allowed to make those decisions herself.
Neither man considers himself disloyal.
Both believe they are protecting Erlynn and Avelora.
They simply disagree about what protecting her means.
To most citizens, the structure of the Crown appears simple: Queen Erlynn rules Avelora, advised by her trusted Right and Left Hands and protected by Fenian.
Inside the Royal Palace, the reality is more complicated.
Erlynn possesses the authority.
Ryo possesses experience and influence.
Wyo provides unwavering support to his brother.
Fenian watches over the Queen.
All four served, or grew up within, the same royal household. All four care about Avelora. None of them wish to see the kingdom harmed.
But three years after the disappearance of the King, Avelora is still ruled by a young Queen learning how to trust her own judgement while surrounded by people who have spent far longer than she has deciding what is best for the Crown.
For now, Avelora remains peaceful, and its people largely trust their Queen.
Behind the doors of the Royal Palace, however, the question is slowly becoming not whether Erlynn is a good person.
It is whether she will learn to become her own Queen.
