The Gilded Fang

While the King of Aethelgard looks toward the sun from his spires in High-crest, the shadows of the capital’s lower docks and cramped tenements belong to The Gilded Fang. They are a disciplined, hierarchical criminal syndicate that has woven itself into the very fabric of the kingdom's economy. Operating with a code of silence and blood-bound loyalty, they represent the undisputed masters of the Bandali underworld.

The Reach of the Fang

The Gilded Fang holds a monopoly on illicit trade within Aethelgard and the surrounding Trade Coalitions. They have no true rivals; any upstart gang that attempts to move product without a tribute to the Fang is quickly and quietly "liquidated." Their network of eyes and ears is so pervasive that it is said a gold coin cannot drop in a High-crest tavern without a Fang lieutenant hearing the ring.

However, their influence has a hard border. They strictly avoid Yuan-ti territories. Viewing them as areas full of calculating serpentine monsters. Instead, the Fang focuses on the "warm-blooded" markets, specializing in:

• Smuggling: Moving rare jungle spices, prohibited alchemical ingredients, and ancient artifacts from Stinky’s Reach and the deep interior into the walled safety of the kingdom.

• Protection: "Taxing" the merchants of Verdan and the smiths of Woodward to ensure their shops don't succumb to "accidental" fires.

• Information: Acting as the premier brokers of secrets, often knowing which noble is in debt long before the King’s tax collectors do.

The Don of the Docks: Anton "The Scar" Vane

The syndicate is commanded by a man whose ambition is as legendary as his temper: Anton Vane.

A former refugee who rose from the filth of the High-crest slums, Vane is a man of expensive tastes and explosive violence. He is often seen draped in silks from Verdan, lounging in a heavily guarded estate overlooking the docks. He views himself not as a criminal, but as a "Necessary Provider" of the things the God of Light’s laws forbid.

Vane is driven by a singular obsession: The World is Mine. He has no patience for the slow bureaucracy of the crown or the "soft" mercy of the Disparate. He rules through a mix of extreme charisma and sudden, overwhelming force. Those who serve him are treated like family—provided they never lie and always deliver his cut. Those who cross him find themselves at the bottom of the High-crest cliffs, their lungs filled with seawater.

Operations and the "Golden Tribute"

The Gilded Fang operates out of the Silt-District, the most dangerous and fog-choked quarter of the capital. Here, the "Golden Tribute" is collected—a percentage of every illegal transaction made on the continent.

• The Silent Handlers: The Fang’s elite enforcers, often former soldiers or disgraced knights, who ensure the syndicate's "laws" are respected where the King's law fails.

• The Runners: A network of street urchins and low-level cutpurses who act as the syndicate's sensory nervous system.

• The Stinky’s Reach Connection: The Fang maintains secret maritime routes to the lawless marshes of Stinky’s Reach, using modified skiffs to bypass Aethelgard’s coastal patrols under the cover of the new moon.

The syndicate is currently at a crossroads. Anton Vane has begun eyeing the ancient "Logic-Artifacts" being smuggled out of Ishteka ruins. While his advisors warn that messing with Yuan-ti relics is a death sentence, Vane’s hunger for power is beginning to outweigh his caution.
