If the God of Light is the architect of Bandali’s beauty, the Great Serpent is the architect of its corruption. Driven by a deep-seated jealousy of the "Bright Spark" inherent in humans, the Great Serpent sought to claim the God of Light’s children for his own. He viewed human emotion—mercy, love, and grief—not as a gift, but as a flaw that kept them weak, disorganized, and easy to manipulate.
The Temptation of Logic
Centuries ago, the Great Serpent began whispering to the high priests of the Ishteka. He offered them a way to transcend the "frailty" of their mortal hearts, promising a state of cold, absolute logic and the power to conquer all of Bandali. To the Great Serpent, this was never about "improving" humanity; it was about creating a race of perfect servants who would fuel his divinity through a never-ending cycle of blood sacrifice.
As the Ishteka embraced the Rituals of Slither, they traded their souls for scales. The Great Serpent took delight in this corruption, watching as his new "logic-driven" children enslaved the rest of the continent. He became the patron deity of Cruelty, Decay, Poison, and Slumber, thriving on the calculated suffering of the "warm-blooded" world.
The Slumbering Leviathan
Following his mysterious decline and the subtle plotting of the God of Light, the Great Serpent fell into a cosmic stasis. However, his physical presence in Bandali is far more literal than most realize.
• The Submerged Maw: Ancient maps and forbidden scrolls suggest that the Great Serpent’s colossal avatar form rests far beneath the churning seas surrounding Bandali. He is so massive that his rhythmic breathing is said to cause the tides.
• The Scaled Foundation: Most terrifyingly, the lore states that the Great Serpent’s tail stretches beneath the tectonic plates of the continent. The jagged, impassable mountains that form the western border of the Kingdom of Aethelgard are not stone at all—they are the fossilized, dirt-covered ridges of the Serpent’s own spine. The kingdom literally sits upon the back of its greatest ancient enemy.
The Usurper’s Blasphemy: Ssendis vs. The Deep
This physical reality is the primary point of contention between the Hallowed Coil and the rest of the Yuan-ti world.
Ssendis, the Anathema ruler of Kha-Zul, vehemently denies the "slumbering body" theory. He views the idea of a god sleeping under the mountains as a myth designed to keep the Yuan-ti stagnant and waiting.
• The Claim: Ssendis publicly declares that he is the only true avatar. He maintains that the Great Serpent’s essence has fully migrated into his own multi-headed form.
• The Reality: The Scaled Confederation and the secret cults believe Ssendis knows the truth—that the god is indeed beneath the sea—and that he is using his "Siphon-Altars" to literally bleed the sleeping god dry. By denying the existence of the slumbering avatar, Ssendis prevents his followers from looking toward the sea for guidance, keeping their eyes fixed solely on him.
Divine Domain & Alignment
The Great Serpent is the epitome of Neutral Evil. He is not chaotic for the sake of destruction, nor is he bound by a sense of honor; he is purely self-interested and calculating.
• Domains: Death, Trickery, Nature (the predatory aspect), and Slumber.
• The Threat: It is said that if the Great Serpent were to ever fully wake, the mountains of Aethelgard would shatter as he uncoils, and the sea would rush in to drown the "Bright Spark" of humanity forever.
