While the Great Serpent represents the logical zenith of the Ishteka, a darker, more ancient shadow lingers in the forbidden corners of Bandali. The Primordial Serpent is a deity of pure, unmaking hunger—an entity that predates the very concept of the Ishteka. She does not seek to rule, to refine, or to evolve; her only goal is to consume the world and the sun itself, returning the universe to a state of void.
In the beginning times, the Primordial Serpent’s hunger was so vast it threatened to unravel the tapestry of existence. This led to a desperate and unlikely alliance. The God of Light, the sworn enemy of the Great Serpent, was forced to join forces with the master of logic to prevent the total annihilation of the world. Though the Great Serpent despised the God of Light’s "emotional" radiance, his own cold calculation dictated that a world devoured by the Primordial Serpent was a world he could not rule.
Together, they combined their powers—one providing the blinding radiance to bind her and the other providing the immutable, logical seals to cage her. They cast her into a fragmented, sealed dimension, ending her reign of terror but leaving a permanent stain on the spiritual fabric of Bandali.
The Cults of the Sealed Void
Most Ishteka view the Primordial Serpent with a terror that even their cold logic cannot fully suppress. However, small, secretive cults remain hidden in the dark places of the continent. These cultists do not worship her out of love or a desire for power; they do so out of a twisted, pragmatic sense of duty.
They believe that the seals placed by the God of Light and the Great Serpent are slowly fraying. To prevent the "Great Devouring," these cults perform grim, silent sacrifices in her name. They believe that by satiating her hunger with trickles of blood and soul-force, they can keep her complacent within her prison. To these cultists, their horrific work is the only thing keeping the sun in the sky and preventing the Primordial Serpent from rising to swallow the world—and the Yuan-ti along with it.
