The Southern Woodlands

The Southern Woodlands serve as the atmospheric and dangerous threshold between the civilized lowlands of Aethelgard and the impenetrable peaks of the Spine Mountains. Running like a thick, emerald ribbon along the eastern base of the mountain range, this untamed forest acts as a natural barrier that even the most seasoned King’s Guard hesitate to cross.

• The Shadowed Canopy: Because the forest is nestled directly against the towering Spine Mountains, the sun sets hours earlier here than in the rest of the kingdom. This creates a perpetual state of "False Twilight," where ancient, gargantuan trees with silver-grey bark knit their limbs together, trapping a heavy mist that smells of damp loam and sweet, predatory blossoms. The undergrowth is a suffocating maze of briars and phosphorescent fungi that seem to pulse in rhythm with the mountain's distant, tectonic groans.

• The Warden’s Folly: Historically, the Kings of Aethelgard attempted to taming these woods to establish mountain passes for mineral extraction, but the forest "fought back." Lore tells of the Whispering Roots—trees that move inches every night to swallow carved paths and stone markers. Today, the only remnants of royal authority are the moss-covered ruins of "Way-Stations," now used by outlaws, hermits, and those seeking to disappear from the Light’s rigid hierarchy.

• The Mountain-Echo Predators: The ecology of the Woodlands is dictated by its proximity to the Spine. Strange, mountain-dwelling terrors often descend into the thickets to hunt, including Stone-Skin Panthers and swarms of Needle-Flies that thrive in the humid shadow of the peaks. It is a place where the "Divine Light" of High-crest feels distant and cold, replaced by the raw, primal logic of a forest that has never known a master’s axe.
