The Disparate are a unique lineage in Bandali—scaled humanoids who possess the physical resilience of a serpent (minus the magic resistance regular Yuan-ti typically have) but the vibrant, empathetic heart of a human. They are often viewed as "Grounded Children" of the Good Serpent, a winged deity of protection and mercy who stands in stark contrast to the cold logic of the Great Serpent and the mindless hunger of the Primordial Serpent.
Origins: The Failed Evolution
The Disparate were born from the Great Rectification, a series of alchemical experiments conducted by Ishteka Malisons during the height of the empire. These priests sought a shortcut to divinity, attempting to create a body more "conductive" to divine energy. However, the serum backfired. Instead of stripping away humanity, the subjects’ cold blood "thawed." The result was a lineage that retained the scales of a snake but regained the empathy and soul of a human.
Deemed "genetic failures," the original Disparates were hunted or enslaved. Most eventually fled the jungle temples, seeking refuge in the eastern lands of Aethelgard. Because they were born of alchemy rather than the "blessing" of logic, they are viewed as broken outcasts by true Yuan-ti and as suspicious monsters by the humans of the Kingdom.
The Nature of the Disparate
The experience of being a Disparate varies wildly based on how an individual entered the lineage.
• Natural Born: Those born to Disparate parents grow up with emotions naturally. To them, the stories of "The Flood" are merely ancestral myths.
• Human Seekers: Some humans within Aethelgard or the borderlands choose to undergo the molt out of devotion to the Good Serpent. For them, the transition is smooth; they describe it as "waking up" with a clearer mind and a physical form better suited for the harsh wilds of Bandali.
• The Reclaimed (Former Yuan-ti): These are former Purebloods who have turned their back on the Great Serpent. They experience The Flood—a violent psychic break where decades of repressed guilt, love, and fear hit them all at once. Those who survive this transition often become the most fanatical protectors of life, desperate to atone for their past.
Society and the Watchful Eye
The Disparate do not have a nation of their own. Instead, they live as urban nomads within human cities like Verdan or Woodward. While they are permitted to live within the Kingdom of Aethelgard, they are kept under a "Close Eye."
• Life in the Shadows: They often settle in "Scale-Ghettos," working as alchemists, trackers, and healers. Their knowledge of serpentine biology makes them invaluable for treating jungle fevers and venomous bites.
• Faith of the Winged One: Most Disparates bypass the God of Light to worship the Good Serpent. They believe the Winged One is the true father of their lineage, and they see themselves as his grounded children, tasked with protecting the world from the shadows.
• Aethelgard’s Stance: The knights of High-crest tolerate the Disparate only because of their utility and their obvious distance from the Ishteka. However, a Disparate is never truly trusted; they are monitored by city watches to ensure their "cold-blooded" nature doesn't resurface.
