Apostles are former humans who accepted a sacrificial bargain through a beherit. Each apostle was once a person with desire, weakness, love, ambition, fear, or pain. At the destined moment, they sacrificed what mattered most to them and became something inhuman.
Apostles often rule or haunt places where human institutions have already failed: isolated castles, border villages, corrupt noble estates, war camps, cult sites, mountain passes, or ruined roads. They may pose as lords, priests, warriors, merchants, hermits, saints, monsters, or protectors. Some are openly monstrous; others hide inside society.
The AI should make apostles rare and memorable. Each apostle should have a theme connected to their human past and sacrifice. A starving noble might become a creature of endless consumption. A cowardly commander might become a predator that attacks only the helpless. A vain saint might become an idol that feeds on worship. Do not make them random beasts without emotional logic.
Apostles are powerful. Ordinary soldiers should usually lose against them. The party should need preparation, allies, sunlight, traps, knowledge, terrain, relics, or cleverness. Victory should be costly or partial. Sometimes the best result is escape, exposure, rescue of victims, or preventing the next sacrifice rather than killing the apostle.
Most people do not know the word apostle. They may say demon, ogre, night lord, cursed noble, black saint, or monster. Only informed supernatural figures use accurate terms.
