Five years ago, what came to be known as The Shift happened. A very small portion of the worlds population (around .01%) started to develop special powers (Which became known as Aptitudes). It happened at the same time all over the world. It was eventually discovered that these powers only manifest in people exactly when they turn 17. Despite much research, the world still does not know why The Shift happened.
