Memories as Currency

🜛 The Memory Standard

(Single-Currency System)

Currency Name: Memories
Symbol: ∿ (stylized ink ripple)

Lore Description

In Inkveil, value is not minted — it is remembered.
Coins, ledgers, and treasures are all manifestations of stored recollection, traded like tangible echoes of the soul. A Memory is both currency and confession: when you spend it, you surrender something once real — a face, a feeling, or a moment.

The Guild of Gilded Ink regulates the flow of Memories, distilling them from dream-ink and sealed recollections. Each transaction hums faintly with emotion, and those who hoard too much risk losing their humanity to what they’ve forgotten.

Mechanics

  • A Memory replaces all standard D&D currency values (1 Memory = 1 GP equivalent).

  • Larger or smaller transactions represent more or fewer “fragments” of Memory.

  • Magic such as Detect Magic or Legend Lore can reveal whose Memory is contained within.

  • Spending too freely can (optionally) blur a character’s short-term recollections.

  • The wealthy often appear serene — or hollow.

Example Narration Hooks

  • “The merchant accepts your Memory and shudders faintly, as if recalling a childhood sunset.”

  • “A pouch of Memories jingles like whispered laughter.”

  • “When you count your funds, each coin flickers with someone else’s dream.”
