Nestled between the frozen southern borders of Skarnheim and the northern edges of Eldoria, lies the Shattered Dunes — a vast, merciless desert born from the wounds of the Shattering itself. Once a fertile valley where ancient civilizations thrived, this region was torn asunder when fragments of the dying Primordial Vael rained from the sky during the First Breaking. What remains is an endless sea of blackened sand, jagged obsidian shards, and wind-scoured ruins that shift and reform with every storm.
The desert is a place of brutal extremes: blistering heat by day that cracks skin and boils blood, and freezing nights that can kill even the hardiest Skarnheim rangers. Mirages whisper lies to travelers, showing phantom cities or long-dead loved ones, while the ever-present sandstorms carry voices from the Veil — maddening fragments of dead gods and forgotten empires. Ancient half-buried temples and shattered obelisks from a pre-human civilization dot the landscape, many still containing dormant fragments of the Broken Blade or cursed artifacts that drive looters to insanity or violent mutation.
Notable Features & Dangers
The Glass Sea: Vast stretches of fused black glass that reflect nightmarish visions and sometimes show glimpses of other times or realities.
Bone Caravans: Nomadic Ashborn and exiled Beastmen tribes that wander the dunes, trading in relics, water, and slaves. They are as likely to kill travelers as trade with them.
Veil Rifts: Unstable tears in reality that open without warning, spilling forth horrors or temporarily altering the laws of nature.
The Crimson Spires: A cluster of towering red rock formations said to mark the grave of a fallen Seraphim general from the war against the Sunken Empire. Blood-red sand perpetually falls from their peaks.
Ruins of Valthuun: The greatest known lost city in the desert, partially uncovered only during the rare “Still Winds” — periods when the desert falls eerily silent and ancient evils stir.
Few dare cross the Shattered Dunes. Those who do — whether to reach Eldoria’s lush lands or to flee Skarnheim’s frozen justice — rarely arrive unchanged. Many return (if they return at all) with sand-scarred skin, haunted eyes, and secrets they refuse to speak aloud. The desert remembers every soul that crosses it, and it is always hungry.
