The Endless Sea

The Endless Sea is the vast, restless ocean that completely encircles the continent of Vaelor. It stretches beyond every horizon, cold, dark, and unforgiving — a primordial entity that seems to resent the very existence of land.

To the people of Vaelor, the Endless Sea is not merely a body of water. It is a graveyard of civilizations, a realm of forgotten horrors, and a constant reminder that the Shattering did not spare the oceans. The sea is unnaturally deep in many places, with trenches said to descend into the Veil itself. Its waters are a dark, almost black slate-grey, reflecting the ashen skies above like a tarnished mirror.

Physical Characteristics

  • The Black Tides: The sea is famous for its violent, unpredictable tides and sudden storms that can appear without warning. The water often carries a faint metallic scent, as if mixed with old blood or volcanic minerals.

  • The Sunken Empire’s Legacy: Along the southeastern coast, countless ruins of the ancient Sunken Empire protrude from the waves — broken marble towers, submerged palaces, and shattered aqueducts. At low tide, entire drowned cities become partially visible, their streets claimed by barnacles and glowing deep-sea flora.

  • The Isles of Mist: To the northeast, are the mysterious Isles of Mist. These islands are perpetually shrouded in thick, supernatural fog. Ships that approach them often vanish, only to reappear weeks later with crews driven mad or missing entirely.

  • The Veil Currents: In certain regions, strange glowing currents ripple beneath the surface. Sailors call these “Veil Currents.” Those foolish enough to sail through them report hearing voices, seeing impossible visions, or suffering terrible mutations.

Wildlife and Dangers

The Endless Sea is teeming with life, most of it hostile. Massive shadow-whales glide through the depths, their songs capable of shattering hulls. Schools of razor-toothed serpents patrol the coasts, and colossal kraken-like abominations are said to sleep in the deepest trenches, occasionally stirred by powerful Veil activity.

Storms in the Endless Sea are legendary. Some are natural; others are supernatural tempests born from clashing realities, raining not only water but black ash, shards of crystallized memory, or even blood.

Human (and Non-Human) Interaction

Maritime trade is dangerous and limited. Only the most daring captains — many sponsored by the Bone & Salt Trade Company — regularly brave the deeper waters. Most coastal communities survive through cautious fishing in shallow waters and desperate scavenging of shipwrecks.

To the people of Vaelor, the Endless Sea represents both possibility and doom. It is the only path to whatever may remain of the world beyond their broken continent… and a constant threat that one day the sea will rise again to finish what the Shattering began.
