Valdris is a brutal, unforgiving realm of wind-swept steppes, jagged black rock, and endless warfare, lying east of the Veliscar Desert across the Ashen Plains. Born from the shattered bones of fallen giants during the Age of Blood and Stone, this kingdom embodies the raw, merciless strength that defines much of Vaelor. Here, weakness is a death sentence and honor is measured only in blood spilled and victories claimed. The land itself seems to reject softness — sparse, iron-rich soil yields little food, forcing its people into constant raiding and conquest.
Society and Culture
Valdris is ruled by a High Warlord, chosen every seven years through ritual combat in the blood-soaked arenas of Kraghollow. Strength, cunning, and the ability to command loyalty through fear or glory are the only virtues that matter. Society is organized into warrior clans, each fiercely competitive yet bound by ancient codes of ritual combat. Slavery is widespread; captured enemies, debtors, and Tamed Monsters fuel the economy and the arenas. The people of Valdris view the frozen weakness of Skarnheim and the decadent softness of Eldoria with open contempt.
Key Locations
Kraghollow: The black fortress-capital carved into a massive obsidian cliff. Its halls echo with war drums and the screams of the defeated.
The Iron Arenas: Vast circular pits where daily gladiatorial games, public executions, and beast fights entertain the masses and test new warriors.
The Ashen Road: The great eastern artery, constantly patrolled by the feared Black Cavalry — elite heavy horsemen mounted on warhorses bred with Tamed Monsters blood.
The Bonecrag Mountains: A range of iron-rich peaks where slaves toil in brutal mines and ancient giant ruins still hold powerful artifacts.
Dangers and Role in the Lore
Valdris grows increasingly aggressive as resources dwindle. Raiding parties press deeper into Skarnheim’s eastern borders, and rumors suggest the current High Warlord seeks an alliance (or conquest) with Elias Veyra to claim fragments of the Broken Blade for himself. The kingdom is a powder keg of martial ambition that could ignite continental war at any moment.
