South of the jagged Ironspine Mountains lies Vintermort Forest — a vast, primordial woodland that has grown increasingly twisted and malevolent in recent decades. Once a majestic evergreen forest of ancient pines and silver-barked oaks, it is now known as one of the most dangerous regions in east Vaelor.
The corruption began subtly — strange rituals performed in hidden glades by desperate druids and rogue Thornhearts seeking greater power. What started as forbidden growth has since spiraled out of control. The trees of Vintermort have become carnivorous nightmares: their bark is blackened and hardened like iron, while long, barbed thorns drip with sticky sap that smells of iron and decay. Massive roots slither across the forest floor like living serpents, and some trees have developed gaping maws lined with jagged wooden teeth.
A perpetual dimness hangs over the forest. Even during midday, sunlight barely penetrates the dense, sickly canopy, casting everything in shades of deep green, violet, and blood-red. The air is thick with the scent of rot, sap, and something faintly metallic.
The Village of Thornwald
On the northern edge of the forest sits Thornwald, a beleaguered logging village that has become the last line of defense between civilization and the growing horror within. In the past three years, the village has suffered increasingly frequent attacks by corrupted wildlife — thorn-covered dire wolves, swarms of blood-drinking insects, and ambulatory trees that drag victims screaming into the depths. Most terrifying of all are the disappearances of children, taken silently during the night, never to be seen again. Some believe the forest itself is hungry and is calling the young to feed its growing corruption.
Locals now speak in hushed tones of the Vintermort Heart, a rumored place deep within the forest where the corruption is strongest — a colossal, pulsating tree said to be fused with the remains of an ancient elven archdruid who attempted to master the darkness.
Vintermort Forest is not merely dangerous. It is alive, aware, and angry. Those who enter its depths rarely return unchanged — if they return at all.
Major Locations in Vintermort Forest
The Vintermort Heart (The Forest’s Core) The pulsating, nightmarish center of the corruption. A colossal, ancient tree (said to be over 1,000 years old) fused with the remains of an elven archdruid. Its bark bleeds black sap, and massive thorned veins spread across the ground like arteries. This is the source of the forest’s hunger. Deep inside its hollow trunk lies a ruined temple where the original corrupting ritual took place.
The Hollow Cathedral The skeletal remains of an ancient elven temple swallowed by the forest. Massive trees have grown through the marble structure, creating a grotesque fusion of architecture and nature. Glowing fungi illuminate stained glass windows now covered in vines. It serves as a gathering place for corrupted dryads and Thornheart cultists.
The Bleeding Glade A clearing where the ground itself bleeds a dark, viscous sap. Corpses of animals and unlucky travelers hang from the trees, impaled by living thorns. This is a sacrificial site used by dark druids and a place where powerful (but dangerous) rituals can be performed.
The Whispering Mire A vast, flooded section of the forest filled with stagnant black water and floating corpses. Pale, ghostly flowers grow here that whisper secrets (and lies) to those who listen too long. Home to swamp horrors and parasitic entities.
The Bone Orchard A horrifying grove where the trees grow human-shaped fruits made of bone and twisted flesh. This is where many of the missing children of Thornwald are said to end up. The trees here are semi-sentient and extremely aggressive.
The Blackroot Warren An underground network of massive root tunnels beneath the forest. Used by giant insects, burrowing horrors, and desperate outcasts. Some tunnels lead to ancient elven crypts untouched for centuries.
