Altdrachen

@Altdrachen

Altdrachen is the largest city in the Arethian Empire and the seat of imperial authority. Capital of both The individual @Kingdom of Helmrath and the greater @The Arethian Empire. Built across rising terrain beneath the looming fortress of Greifenfeste, the city spreads across fortified districts connected by heavy gates and stone roads.

The city is constructed from weathered gray stone and steep brown-tiled roofs, giving Altdrachen a darker, aged appearance compared to many other imperial settlements. This visual tone reflects the city itself: ancient, powerful, and quietly decaying beneath layers of ceremony and tradition.

Within its walls reside nobles, commoners, diplomats, merchants, soldiers, scholars, and criminals alike. Embassies from across Colldria operate here, treaties are signed, taxes collected, armies trained, and conspiracies whispered in shadowed halls.

Though Altdrachen appears magnificent to visitors arriving through its gates, its splendor hides stark divisions. Wealth and influence dominate the noble districts while poorer quarters struggle with overcrowding and crime. Yet despite these contrasts, the city remains the beating heart of imperial politics.

Above it all looms Greifenfeste, the immense fortress keep connected to the city by Kaiserstrasse. From this stronghold the Emperor of the Arethian Empire governs the realm, his presence casting both protection and pressure over the capital below.

Culture of Altdrachen

The culture of Altdrachen reflects the broader traditions of the Kingdom of Helmrath: hierarchical, ceremonious, and steeped in martial heritage.

The city is a place where appearances matter deeply. Nobles maintain elaborate households, diplomats attend formal banquets, and imperial officials enforce rigid bureaucratic systems that track everything from taxes to trade routes. Honor, lineage, and reputation carry immense weight within the capital’s society.

Religion also plays a visible role in daily life. Grand cathedrals dedicated to deities such as Bahamut, Ilmater, Torm, Sune, and Oghma stand across the districts, reflecting the moral and philosophical influences shaping imperial culture.

Yet beneath the polished surface lies a far more pragmatic reality. Political leverage, bribery, and quiet threats often determine outcomes more effectively than ceremony. Powerful noble houses compete for influence, foreign embassies conduct espionage behind diplomatic smiles, and criminal organizations exploit the cracks within the city’s governance.

To survive in Altdrachen requires awareness of the shifting alliances, ambitions, and dangers that define life within the capital.
Speech in Altdrachen is firm and deliberate, with hard consonants and clipped phrasing that gives commands weight and formality. Names favor strong compound sounds such as Alric, Falkenrath, Gerwald, Mondthal, and Drachenfels, often drawn from ancestral lineages or heroic deeds.

Cuisine

Cuisine in tend to favor roasted meats, dense breads, and slow-cooked stews that can feed large households or barracks. Thick loaves of dark grain bread are common at nearly every table, often served alongside smoked sausages, salted pork, or roasted game brought in from nearby hunting lands. Street vendors and market kitchens sell hot meat pies, skewered sausages while noble tables favor honey-glazed roast meats and baked pastries filled with fruit preserves.

Districts of Altdrachen

@Adelshain

Adelshain is the noble district of Altdrachen, home to minor noble estates, wealthy merchant families, and refined markets serving the city’s upper class. Positioned on elevated ground overlooking much of the capital, the district enjoys wide streets, carefully maintained plazas, and grand residences surrounded by stone walls.

Elegant temples dedicated to Lathander and Selune stand within Adelshain, reinforcing the district’s image of refinement and divine favor. Markets such as Adelshain Market supply luxury goods imported from across Colldria.

Life in Adelshain is quiet compared to the rest of the city. Servants move between estates carrying purchases from upscale shops, noble carriages pass through guarded streets, and diplomatic guests occasionally visit for private gatherings.

Yet even here the pressures of imperial politics are present. Noble houses constantly maneuver for prestige and influence within the Emperor’s court.

House Falkenrath

House Falkenrath is an ancient noble lineage that claims descent from the legendary founder of the Empire, Areth Drakenfel. Their fortified estate, Falkenrath Estate, stands on a raised stone outcrop within Adelshain overlooking the city below.

The house maintains a reputation for loyalty to imperial tradition and martial discipline. Though not among the wealthiest noble families, their lineage grants them respect within imperial circles. Their estate includes private barracks, administrative offices, and halls decorated with ancestral banners honoring generations of knights. House Falkenrath are an offshoot branch of House Drakenfel. The House is led by @Silbex Falkenrath

House Mondthal

House Mondthal represents the quieter side of Adelshain’s nobility. Their modest manor reflects a family that has fallen on difficult times while still maintaining noble dignity.

Deeply devoted to Selune, the house plays a significant role in maintaining the nearby Cathedral of Selune and supporting religious works within the district. Though their wealth has diminished, their reputation for piety and quiet integrity keeps them respected among the faithful. The House has diminished to only @Klara Mondthal

@Greifenmarkt

Greifenmarkt serves as the diplomatic and administrative center of Altdrachen. Located along the northern approach to Kaiserstrasse, the district houses embassies, treasury offices, banking houses, and legal institutions that support imperial governance.

Foreign powers such as the Mortarchate of Ashur-Rem, the Kingdom of Valcarré, the Hearthbound Concord, and the High Kingdom of Kharduun maintain embassy residences here. Diplomats, scribes, and merchants fill the streets as negotiations and trade agreements shape the future of the continent of Colldria.

Important institutions such as the Kaiserliches Steuerhaus manage imperial taxes and finances from within the district. Meanwhile, market streets like Greifenmarkt Market Street allow wealthy merchants to sell goods to nobles and foreign envoys.

Greifenmarkt’s proximity to Kaiserstrasse ensures that those conducting business here remain close to the Emperor’s court.

@Eisenwehr

Eisenwehr is the military heart of Altdrachen. The district houses soldiers, weapon craftsmen, and the institutions responsible for training the Empire’s future commanders.

Streets are filled with armorers, blacksmiths, supply merchants, and taverns frequented by soldiers. Training yards echo with the clash of practice weapons while cadets from the Imperial Kriegsakademie march in formation through the streets.

Temples dedicated to Torm and Sune reflect the values of duty, honor, and discipline that shape life within the district.

The district also contains the Altdrachen Adventurer’s Guild, making Eisenwehr a gathering place for warriors, mercenaries, and explorers seeking work throughout Colldria.

@Imperial Kriegsakademie

At the center of Eisenwehr stands the Imperial Kriegsakademie, the most prestigious military institution in the Arethian Empire.

Here cadets study battlefield tactics, logistics, siegecraft, and imperial law of war. Lecture halls host strategic debates while training yards prepare future officers through rigorous drills and simulated combat exercises.

Graduates of the Kriegsakademie often rise to positions of command within imperial armies, making the academy a cornerstone of the Empire’s military strength.

@Sonnenfels

Sonnenfels is the smallest district of Altdrachen and occupies the sunlit slopes of the mountain beneath Greifenfeste. Known for its quieter atmosphere, the district attracts scholars, scribes, and philosophers.

The Cathedral of Oghma stands here, drawing clerics and intellectuals who dedicate themselves to the pursuit of knowledge. Bookshops, libraries, and study halls fill the surrounding streets.

Markets such as Sonnenmarkt Platz provide goods to the district’s residents while restaurants like Der Sonnenblick offer views across the rooftops of Altdrachen.

Compared to the political maneuvering of Greifenmarkt or the military energy of Eisenwehr, Sonnenfels feels contemplative—though the influence of knowledge cultivated here can shape decisions made across the Empire.

@Dammerbruch

Dammerbruch lies in the shadowed side of the mountain where sunlight rarely reaches the narrow streets. The district is one of the poorest areas of Altdrachen, home to laborers, scavengers, and those struggling to survive beneath the weight of the imperial capital.

Buildings here lean with age, markets sell salvaged goods, and charity kitchens provide meals to the hungry. Boarding houses offer cheap lodging to workers and travelers who cannot afford better districts. Though often overlooked by the nobility, Dammerbruch remains an essential part of the city’s economy, providing labor and trade routes that support wealthier districts. Unfortunately, poverty has also allowed criminal elements to flourish within its alleys.

The Outfit

Operating quietly throughout Altdrachen is a powerful criminal syndicate known simply as The Outfit.

The organization maintains hidden operations across multiple districts but holds its strongest influence within Dammerbruch. Smuggling warehouses, secret meeting houses, and safehouses allow its agents to move contraband, weapons, and stolen artifacts through the capital. Through bribery and intimidation, The Outfit has established connections with merchants, guards, and even certain noble intermediaries. Its network extends beyond the city into ports, trade routes, and pirate havens across Colldria. While imperial authorities publicly deny the syndicate’s influence, many officials quietly acknowledge that removing The Outfit entirely would disrupt the delicate balance of power within Altdrachen.
