There is another race, relatively new to Thedas, that most people call Quanri. This race is large and powerful; on average, they tower over humans by a foot or more. Most have horns growing from their heads.
However the lable "Quanri" more accurately refers to a follower of the religious text known as the Qun, regardless of his or her race- hence the capitalization in most texts. The horned race's ancient name is "kossith" this term is not widely used or even widely known outside scholarly circles. Qunari leadership does not recognize even the concept of kossith and few if any rank in file Qunari are aware of the word.
The Qun's teachings are so pervasive that, under its law, a person's race dose not really matter. A person is either Quanri or not Quanri, and because the Quanri have practiced selective breeding for thousands of years, no one can be certain what the original kossith looked like.
History
The Quanri arrived on the shores of Thedas several ages ago from an uncharted territory. They came by way of incredible warships called dreadnoughts and immediately began a war to dominate all people in their path. Humans in particular are a lesser people to the Qunari, in large part because of the looser restrictions they place on the practice of magic when compared to the Qun. Qunari generally refer to each other by their roles in society rather than birth names.
Even among the Qunari, not much is known about where they came from or why they landed in Thedas. Conquest seems like the obvious answer. The Quanri see conversion to the Qun as a benefit to all.
To many humans, the Qunari are an evil and tyrannical people who do not believe in individual rights. In the lands occupied by Quanri, all other belief systems are expelled, families are split apart, marriages are forbidden, and any dissenter is sent for "reeducation" by a secret police that watches for any violation of the strict Quanri ethos.
Through a delicate peace exists currently between the Quanri and the rest of Thedas, with the magic-celebrating Imperium as the exception, future conflict is almost assured. The Qun is an implacable force that will not be denied.
Language
Quanri speak a harsh language called Qunlat. As a rule, Qunari have little use for communication beyond its necessities. When speaking to those who do not follow the Qun, their statements are often laconic, with an underlying condescension.
Few among the Qun's people speak the common tongue, and fewer speak it well. In a culture that strives for mastery, to have only a passable degree of skill is perhaps embarrassing, and so Quanri often keep quiet among foreigners.
