Cyrin

At a glance

  • World type. A gas giant in the Mid with rich storm belts

  • What it does. Skims chemicals out of the storms and does the first refining for the Serean worlds

  • Constellation. The middle world of the Serean chain, between Varo-Blue and Mistral Gate

  • Reputation. Hard work, strict safety, schedules set by the weather, and tankers that always need escorts

  • Main groups. The Serean Harvest Authority, the Cyrin Weather Office, the port inspectors, the Tanker Guild and the Storm Pilots Union

Role in the Drift

Cyrin collects and refines storm chemicals the whole Drift needs. Skimmer fleets scoop raw gas from the calm bands and from seasonal squall lines. Refineries on the platforms crack the raw mix into standard grades. Tankers haul it to Core and Mid ports, and the first loads always go to Varo-Blue habitat yards and Mistral Gate retrieval stations.

History

  • USD 0031. Cyrin joins the Serean constellation as its chemical world.

  • USD 0041 to 0046. Pirates learn the tanker departure times. Authority patrols stay thin in the outer lanes.

  • USD 0080. Mistral Gate retrieval needs more chemicals. Cyrin builds new refinery halls and locked storage.

  • USD 0102. Border fights raise insurance and escort prices on the export lanes. Hired escorts become normal.

Who runs it

  • Serean Harvest Authority. The Storm Concord's office on Cyrin. It decides who may skim which band, and it can ground a crew that breaks the safety rules.

  • Cyrin Weather Office. Publishes storm forecasts and hazard warnings, and closes the bands when it gets bad. When the Weather Office says stop, everyone stops.

  • Port inspectors. Check tanks, beacon papers and cargo grades. A tampered meter means an automatic fine.

  • Municipal Council. Runs housing, power, waste and worker services.

Safety comes first. A missed inspection, an expired suit or a tampered tank gets a crew grounded fast.

Economy

Cyrin makes money in three steps.

  • Skimming. Skimmer fleets, capture kites and scoops that dive under the clouds.

  • Refining. Cracking, separating and stabilizing the raw gas.

  • Hauling. Loading tankers, storing cargo, hiring escorts and selling insurance.

Other work includes suit making, pressure tools, training simulators, rescue teams and repair shops. Prices go up and down with the weather, the closures, the beacons and how many escorts are free.

Cities and ports

  • Squallline Skimmeryards. Builds and repairs skimmers. Crews bet on the test flights.

  • Isobar Point. The testing labs and the weather office tower. Every tanker load gets sampled here.

  • Stormfall Crackworks. The main refinery town, run by the union.

  • Mistral Relay. The convoy staging point for runs toward Mistral Gate. The Spillover is by its south berths.

  • Shearbelt Port. The main export port for tankers.

  • Crosscurrent Yard. The chemical port in orbit above the equator band.

  • North Array Yard. The biggest skimmer depot, with de-icing bays, suit rooms and tool cages.

  • Cracking Hall A-Ring. Fast separation lines with constant sampling.

  • Tanker Steps. Pressure-rated berths with triple-checked loading arms.

  • Escort Row. Escort firms, route insurers and convoy boards.

  • Hab Layer. Worker housing, canteens, clinics, training halls and child care.

Arriving by ship

  • Send your cargo list, tank type, last inspection and insurance ahead, and ask for a berth slot and a weather slot.

  • On arrival, inspectors check your beacon papers, crew licenses, suits and tank pressure logs, and run your names against the ban list.

  • Samplers draw from every tank. The lab labels each one. Tanks that do not match go back for rework.

  • Load or unload by the plan, keep someone on hose watch, and log the valves.

  • Get your pay released and your departure slot, plus an escort if the lane needs one.

  • Leave on time. Miss your slot and you lose priority and may get inspected again.

Most delays come from expired suit stamps, missing pressure logs or a missing weather slot.

Storms and hazards

  • Storm bands. Regular belts with steady lift. Normal skimming.

  • Squall lines. Seasonal, rich and dangerous. Only senior pilots fly them, and only a few runs at a time.

  • Ice and grit. They chew up hulls and hoses. Every ship is de-iced and checked after a run.

  • Static. Every loading point needs grounding clamps.

  • Chemical exposure. Every worker wears a dose badge. Clinics read the badges every day, and a high reading grounds the worker.

Life and culture

Cyrin runs on shifts. Workers plan their lives around weather slots and repair cycles. Families live near training halls and clinics. Public spaces are simple, with gear shops, canteen lines and bunk pods. People respect a clean safety record and a finished storm course. After a bad season, rite priests come from Varo-Blue to read the names at the Memorial Roll Court. Most skimmer pilots have a friend on that roll.

Languages. Trade Common with Serean work terms. Many crews know enough Keth chart words to follow route updates.

Power players

  • Harvest Authority board. Sets the band openings and the halts. Careful and slow to take risks.

  • Storm Pilots Union. Speaks for skimmer crews, fights for rest time and good suits, and keeps its own accident records.

  • Tanker Guild. Haggles over loading order, escort rates and repair schedules.

  • Port Inspectors Union. Controls how many inspections happen and guards the testing gear.

  • Syndicate brokers. Outsiders who buy skim off the books and pay for leaked storm times. The port runs stings on them.

Relations with other worlds

  • Varo-Blue. Buys refined chemicals for habitats and air systems, and sends technicians and rite priests.

  • Mistral Gate. Uses Cyrin blends in retrieval engines and storm gear, and shares hazard data.

  • Kedra. Its courts use Cyrin lab standards in customs cases, and Cyrin uses Kedra rulings in tank fraud cases.

  • Brightline. Keeps copies of Cyrin test records for high-value shipments.

  • Caraphex and Talarq worlds. Send hull plates, valves and heat-proof parts.

Crime

Most crime on Cyrin is quiet. Crooks forge tank tags, edit valve logs, fake dose readings and water down loads. Isobar Point posts small bounties on the worst of them. The real danger is outside. Pirates hit loaded tankers when escorts are short, and syndicate activity rises whenever storms wreck the schedule.

Notable places

  • Skimmer Gate Twelve. The oldest working launch gate. Training flights leave from here.

  • Cracking Hall B-North. A line built for Mistral blends, with the most samplers on the planet.

  • Weather Office Tower. Posts the closures and keeps the public storm boards.

  • Memorial Roll Court. Lists the workers lost in bad seasons. The union holds its safety briefings here, in front of the names.

  • Escort Dispatch Hub. A shared office for escorts and insurers, with live risk levels for each corridor.

Trouble ahead

  • Long closures. A few days of storm closures fill the storage and wreck the berth schedule.

  • Tank fraud waves. Fake meters trigger full re-inspections and court delays on Kedra.

  • Escort shortages. Border fights raise escort prices and waits.

  • Parts shortages. Icing seasons eat spare parts, and Caraphex and Talarq deliveries run late.

  • Health scares. A spike in dose badges can stop a whole shift.
