Scientific Field Guide to Lycanthropes (2)

8. SENSES: PREDATOR PERCEPTION AND “SCENT MATH” A trained lycan can smell information.

Common scent reads:

fear: adrenaline sweat sharp and sour

deception: fear response not matching spoken confidence

sickness: metabolic off-notes, acetone breath, sour iron

ancestry hints: blood chemistry patterns, pheromone families

Hormones: attraction, pheromone chemical signalers, general health

violence: old blood, fresh blood, rage sweat, copper and ash

Predator hearing and vibration sense:

footfalls through floorboards

distant breath patterns

heartbeats in quiet rooms

weapon draw friction in leather

Practical consequence: You cannot “act normal” around a lycan the same way you do around humans. They get extra data. A lot of diplomacy fails because people forget that.

_______________

9. QI AFFINITY: WHY MOON-BOUND LEARN FASTER

Although most are completely unaware, Lycans are unusually compatible with Qi usage, disciplines, and especially martial forms, for several reasons:

higher oxygen throughput supports circulation-based Qi work

pain tolerance lets them train harder without quitting

regenerative enzymes reduce training injuries and seem to naturally attract and reserve Qi energies.

Lycanthropic Enzymes allow cells to use Qi energy as a secondary fuel source.

predator focus states mimic combat meditation

In short: Their biology makes the learning curve shorter.

But there is a catch: Qi amplifies output unless Qi is steadily and reliably replenished. Output increases Hunger. Hunger increases risk. Which is why disciplined packs treat Qi training like weapon handling, not like exercise.

10. DEVOUR: EATING THE IMPOSSIBLE

Extremely rare observed capability, but note worthy. Reserved for a slice-holder of a fraction of the spirit of the first wolf, otherwise called a "chosen" by Hircine worshippers, or the possessor of The Spirit of The First Wolf itself, Devour is the apex expression of the cosmic entity force of hunger. It is not about "eating" meat. It is about metabolizing an existence - in other words, an erasure.

A very high-tier lycan with a connection to the hunger entity can sometimes “consume”:

The soul of a lower tier/ deeply damaged opponent, converting them into fuel or Qi.

fear fields, suppressions, and certain control effects

environmental hazards like poison clouds or choking smoke

some wards or barriers for a brief, dangerous window

Devour-type techniques leave scars. Always.

Costs can include:

nervous system strain

heart strain

insomnia and dream bleed escalation

increased imprint dominance

addiction to the sensation of power

Pack doctrine in Elsir treats Devour as an emergency weapon. If you rely on it, you stop being a soldier and start becoming a disaster.

11. REPRODUCTION AND BLOODLINES True-born lycans exist. They are usually more stable and have higher Harmony potential.

Inheritance patterns:

lycan plus lycan: high chance of true-born

lycan plus human: dormant carrier possible, awakening later through trauma, blood ritual, puberty, or a threshold bite event

Fertility and lunar cycles: Many lineages report improved conception and early gestation stability during certain lunar phases. Packs track it quietly, like supply schedules.

12. FIELD PROTOCOLS AND SAFETY NOTES FOR LYCANS

Eat before battle. Eat after battle. Eat during long watches. Probably eat during battle.

Do not stack high-tier forms without recovery unless you accept Aftershock.

If the Call is loud, ground yourself early. Loud land gets louder.

Treat silver exposure like a fracture, not like a bruise.

For the rare few this applies to: Do not Devour casually. The imprint remembers.

FOR NON-LYCANS WORKING WITH LYCANS

Do not threaten a hungry lycan with food nearby unless you enjoy gambling with your life - because you are also good. More food, the merrier.

If a lycan goes quiet and still mid-conflict, that can be restraint, not fear.

Respect pack signals. They exist for a reason.

Carry silver only if you know what you are doing. Silver escalates encounters instantly. It's offensive on a sensory level.

_______________

13. MYTHS THAT GET PEOPLE KILLED

MYTH: Full moon forces transformation.

TRUTH: The moon only amplifies. The individual can still shift outside of moonlight.

MYTH: Silver instantly kills.

TRUTH: Silver interferes and destabilizes. It makes them killable.

MYTH: Lycans are mindless beasts.

TRUTH: Harmony determines cognition under transformation. Trained Moon-Bound can be terrifyingly tactical.

MYTH: If bitten, you always turn.

TRUTH: Bite conversion is the rarest method. It requires applied intent and still likely fails. Awakening requires thresholds, compatibility, and oftentimes a blood-consumption ritual. Many die. Some do not change. A few become Moon-Bound.
