Vampires are biologically alive, but they sit in a semi-stabilized, altered state. Their core systems remain functional, yet operate on a redesigned metabolic logic:

healing relies on vast amounts of ATP from blood energy rather than cellular nutrition alone
endocrine cycles become blood-driven instead of diet-driven
The Sanguinalis Nocturnum Mutation
The vampiric condition is caused by a rare transmissible bloodborne parasite often called Sanguinalis Nocturnum. During a brief "death" period after infection, the pathogen accumulates in the hindbrain, reworking neural and cellular architecture, where complex electrical signaling enables near-instant communication among all 37,000,000,000,000 cells through airborne ions.
