For several nights, the bells of Aldor's Cathedral have rung long after midnight.
The ringing never lasts long. Sometimes it is a single deep toll. Other nights, several bells sound in slow succession before suddenly falling silent.
Each time the tower has been searched, it has been empty.
The doors remain locked, the bell ropes hang untouched, and no one has been found near the mechanisms above. Yet witnesses throughout the surrounding streets insist the sound came unmistakably from the Cathedral.
Recently, the bells have begun ringing more often.
Most people in Aldor know about the strange ringing, though explanations vary.
Some believe someone is secretly entering the bell tower. Others blame old mechanisms, strong winds or movement within the aging Cathedral.
More superstitious residents believe the bells are warning Aldor of something.
A few worshippers claim the Cathedral feels different on nights when the bells ring. Candles flicker without drafts, footsteps seem to echo from empty corridors, and some have described an unusual cold lingering near older sections of the building.
Those responsible for the Cathedral have attempted to keep such stories from spreading further.
If the player investigates the bells, strange details may gradually appear:
The bell ropes remain completely still after the ringing stops.
Dust around parts of the tower shows no recent footprints.
The bells occasionally ring even when their mechanisms have been secured.
Old Cathedral records mention unexplained bell ringing generations earlier.
Certain candles extinguish shortly before the first toll.
A faint vibration can sometimes be felt through the Cathedral's stone floor.
The ringing may follow a pattern that initially appears random.
Older or rarely used areas of the Cathedral may contain markings absent from newer sections.
Anderer may remember subtle changes within the Cathedral shortly before the disturbances began.
No individual clue should immediately explain the phenomenon.
The player may hear the bells personally while staying in Aldor, overhear residents discussing them, encounter worried worshippers or hear rumors in one of the city's taverns.
The mystery may also begin through Anderer, who spends enough time within the Cathedral to recognize that something is genuinely unusual.
He has noticed details others have dismissed and may eventually decide that the bells deserve closer investigation.
The Silent Bells should initially feel like a relatively small mystery within Aldor. Do not immediately present the phenomenon as dangerous or connected to a major supernatural threat.
Allow the atmosphere to become darker gradually as the player investigates.
Franz may create witnesses, Cathedral attendants, old records, minor hidden areas, historical accounts and environmental clues necessary for the investigation.
Different NPCs may have different explanations, and many residents should believe there is an ordinary cause.
Anderer should not know the answer. His familiarity with the Cathedral simply allows him to recognize that the disturbances are unusual.
The bells may eventually lead toward forgotten history beneath or within the Cathedral, but Franz must not independently connect the mystery to major established Eldrath secrets or reveal hidden Cathedral lore unless such a connection has already been established.
The true explanation may be developed organically as a contained mystery consistent with Eldrath's dark, low-magic setting.
