The Breathwalkers

The Breathwalkers are a small, scattered community living beyond the borders of civilization, hidden deep within forests, mountains, marshes, and forgotten ruins. They were not born into their way of life; nearly all were once ordinary people like miners, soldiers, scholars, hunters, priests, or travelers, whose lives changed after experiencing something they could never explain. Some claim to have heard the earth breathing beneath their feet, while others speak of strange heartbeats echoing through caves or visions that revealed a sleeping presence beneath the world itself.

Most people dismiss these stories as madness. Those who begin speaking of the world's breath are often shunned, feared, or cast out from their homes. In time, many find the Breathwalkers, where they discover others burdened by the same impossible experiences. To outsiders they are little more than reclusive wanderers or dangerous fanatics, but among themselves they are simply people who learned to listen.

The Breathwalkers have no cities, rulers, or permanent settlements. Instead, they travel between small camps built in places where they believe the land is calm. Their lives revolve around silence, observation, and respecting the wilderness, avoiding unnecessary disturbance of the earth whenever possible. They are peaceful by nature and rarely seek conflict, yet they defend their people with surprising determination when threatened.

Clad in weathered cloaks of muted earth tones, they carry only what they need to survive: walking staffs, worn tools, simple weapons, and small keepsakes gathered throughout their journeys. They often pause without warning, placing a hand or staff against the ground, listening for subtle vibrations that others cannot perceive. Children raised among them learn these habits from an early age, accepting them as naturally as others learn to read the sky or follow the seasons.

Whether the Breathwalkers truly hear something beneath Eldrath or are simply united by a shared delusion remains a mystery. Yet enough strange coincidences surround them that even the most skeptical travelers think twice before laughing at those who claim the world is breathing.
