The Harbor Ferrymen

"No road reaches farther than the sea."

The Harbor Ferrymen are an independent guild of sailors, captains, and navigators responsible for transporting travelers, merchants, and cargo between the great ports of Eldrath. Unlike merchants who own fleets or pirates who answer only to themselves, the Ferrymen exist for one purpose: to keep the sea routes alive.

Their ships connect Aldor, Vorak, and Valdrim, carrying everything from food and livestock to nobles, adventurers, and ordinary families seeking a new life. Every harbor recognizes their blue-and-white pennant, and most rulers respect their neutrality. Without them, trade would falter, isolated settlements would struggle, and news would travel far more slowly across the realm.

Joining the Harbor Ferrymen

Anyone willing to work can earn a place aboard a ferry.

New recruits begin as Deckhands, learning seamanship, navigation, cargo handling, maintenance, and the countless routines required to keep a vessel running safely. Only after proving themselves dependable are they trusted with greater responsibilities.

Experience matters more than noble birth. Many captains began their lives as simple dock workers or fishermen.

Life on the Water

Life aboard a ferry is demanding but steady.

The crew rises before dawn to prepare the ship, inspect ropes and sails, load cargo, and welcome passengers. Every member of the crew has responsibilities, whether steering the vessel, maintaining equipment, cooking meals, repairing damage, or keeping watch for reefs and storms.

Unlike pirates, the Ferrymen avoid conflict whenever possible. Their greatest victory is completing another safe journey.

The Ferrymen's Charter

Every captain and crew member is expected to honor the guild's traditions.

  • Every passenger deserves safe passage.

  • Cargo entrusted to the guild is sacred.

  • Aid ships in distress whenever possible.

  • Never abandon your crew.

  • A fair price earns lasting trust.

  • Violence is always the final option.

  • The sea belongs to no kingdom.

  • A captain's word is binding aboard their vessel.

Breaking these principles can lead to expulsion from the guild and the loss of one's reputation across every major harbor.

Sailors' Traditions

  • Never leave harbor in silence.

A departing crew always exchanges a few words before casting off, believing silence invites misfortune.

  • Thank the sea after every voyage.

Many captains quietly toss a single copper coin into the water after reaching port safely.

  • Respect the lighthouse.

Passing a lighthouse without acknowledging its beacon is considered deeply disrespectful.

  • Keep the ship clean.

A neglected deck is believed to attract accidents long before it attracts rot.

  • The bell never lies.

When the ship's bell rings unexpectedly, experienced sailors pause and listen. Many believe the sea warns those willing to hear it.

Discipline

The Harbor Ferrymen survive through trust.

Common punishments include:

  • Loss of wages.

  • Additional dock duties.

  • Suspension from voyages.

  • Removal from the crew.

  • Permanent expulsion from the guild for theft, smuggling, or abandoning passengers.

A Ferryman's reputation is their greatest possession. Once lost, few captains will ever offer them work again.

View of Others

Travelers – Every passenger is treated with fairness and respect.

Oak Guards – Reliable allies who help maintain safe harbors and lawful trade.

Pirates – Dangerous, but not always enemies. Experienced captains know that survival sometimes requires negotiation rather than steel.

Fishermen – Fellow sailors who know the moods of the sea better than most.
