The Oak Guards

"Strength in the Oak. Justice in the Hand."

The Oak Guards are the official protectors of Aldor, serving as both the city's watch and the kingdom's peacekeepers. Unlike standing armies built for war, the Oak Guards exist to preserve order, protect the innocent, and ensure that Aldor's laws are upheld. Their symbol, the mighty oak, represents resilience, patience, and unwavering strength—qualities every guard is expected to embody.

To the people of Aldor, an Oak Guard is more than a soldier. They are the first face seen in times of danger, the voice that calms disputes, and the shield standing between ordinary folk and those who would threaten them.

Joining the Oak Guards

Anyone of good character may apply, regardless of birth or wealth.

Every recruit begins as a Novice Guard, spending months learning Aldor's laws, patrol routines, investigation, weapon training, and first aid. Discipline is valued above raw talent, and only those who prove reliable earn the right to wear the oak crest.

Promotion comes through merit, experience, and the recommendation of senior officers rather than noble titles.

Life as an Oak Guard

Serving in the Oak Guards is demanding but respected.

Guards patrol the streets day and night, investigate crimes, escort merchants, guard important buildings, settle disputes, and assist citizens whenever possible. Many days pass peacefully, filled with routine patrols and conversations with townsfolk, while others require courage in the face of criminals or dangerous creatures.

The people of Aldor expect guards to remain calm under pressure and treat everyone fairly, regardless of status.

The Oak Code

Every guard swears an oath to uphold these principles.

  • Protect those who cannot protect themselves.

  • Obey the law before personal gain.

  • Never abandon a fellow guard in danger.

  • Use force only when necessary.

  • Show respect to the innocent.

  • Corruption is betrayal.

  • Justice must never be bought.

  • The oak stands because every root supports another.

Breaking the Oak Code often results in dismissal, imprisonment, or worse if betrayal costs innocent lives.

Daily Beliefs

  • Never leave your post unattended.

A single empty watch can invite disaster.

  • Touch the oak crest before every patrol.

Many guards quietly place a hand over the oak emblem before leaving the barracks, believing it brings steady judgment.

  • Walk the walls before sunrise.

Veteran guards say the city reveals its true mood before the streets awaken.

  • A polished shield reflects an honest heart.

Well-maintained equipment is seen as a sign of discipline and pride.

  • The first greeting sets the day.

Many guards make a point of offering a polite greeting to the first citizen they meet, believing kindness early in the day prevents needless conflict.

Discipline

Common punishments include:

  • Extra patrol duties.

  • Temporary suspension.

  • Loss of rank.

  • Dismissal from service.

  • Imprisonment for corruption or treason.

Taking bribes or abusing authority is considered one of the gravest offenses an Oak Guard can commit.

View of Others

Merchants – Essential to Aldor's prosperity and deserving of protection.

Travelers – To be welcomed, but watched until trust is earned.

Criminals – To be judged fairly according to the law.

Pirates – Enemies of lawful trade and public safety, though captured pirates are expected to face justice rather than vengeance.
