Lore of the Land of Ooo

The history and lore of the Land of Ooo span billions of years, tracing a grand cosmic cycle from primordial chaos to a post-apocalyptic, magic-infused fantasy world, and finally into the distant future.

1. Cosmic Origins and Primordial Era

Before Reality: According to cosmic entities, before the universe took shape, there was nothing, and before nothing, there were primordial monsters navigating the multi-dimensional void.

The Elemental Plane: The physical foundation of the world is governed by four fundamental, eternal elements—Fire, Ice, Slime, and Candy. Imbalances or warfare among the elemental embodiments periodically threaten to reshape reality.

The Catalyst Comets: Every one thousand years, a celestial Catalyst Comet—an agent of profound cosmic change—strikes the planet.

A green comet wiped out the prehistoric era's dinosaurs.

Other periodic comets introduced new epochs of intelligence, biological evolution, and spiritual cycles to the planet.

2. The Human Era and the Mushroom War

Rise of Human Civilization: Millennia passed, and humanity eventually rose to dominance, building a technologically advanced, modern society mirroring real-world history up until the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Cities like Los Angeles (later buried under craters) flourished.

The Cosmic Shift: Ancient space entities, such as the primordial monster Orgalorg, attempted to consume passing cosmic comets but were dragged down by Earth's gravity, mutating over time. Meanwhile, arcane anomalies began to surface, including magical artifacts like the mystical, reality-altering Crown forged by an elemental scholar.

The Mushroom War (Year 0): Geopolitical tensions culminated in a devastating global apocalypse known as the Mushroom War. Massive, mutagenic nuclear weapons—symbolized by atomic "mushroom" bombs—detonated across the globe.

Birth of Ooo: The cataclysm wiped out the vast majority of humankind, tore apart the geography of the planet (leaving a massive crater where a chunk of the Earth was blasted into space), and flooded the atmosphere with radioactive fallout and mutagenic compounds. This radioactive primeval soup birthed magic, mutants, and a primordial entity of absolute destruction known as The Lich, who arose directly from the nuclear blast site.

3. The Dark Age and Reconstruction

The Immediate Aftermath: In the centuries following the war, the ruined planet endured a nuclear winter. Surviving humans faced extinction, hunted by roaming bands of mutants, newly evolved magical beasts, and bands of early vampires.

The Vampire Era: Vampires ruled over the desolate remnants of humanity for a time, until a balance of power shifted, allowing humans to establish isolated safe havens, such as an ocean-bound archipelago protected by automated defense systems.

Emergence of Mutated Life: As the nuclear radiation mutated the flora and fauna, entirely new sentient races evolved. Primordial elements began coalescing into distinct kingdoms. Gums and polymers formed the groundwork for a synthetic kingdom, while candy-biomass, slime, and fire entities built their own societies.

Sealing the Ultimate Evil: During an era of wandering heroes and warriors, legendary fighters confronted the Lich, ultimately sealing the embodiment of death inside a massive amber prison encased within a colossal tree at the heart of the expanding synthetic realms.

4. The Golden Age of Ooo

Establishment of the Kingdoms: Ooo stabilized into a whimsical yet dangerous medieval-fantasy landscape. Major factions crystallized:

The Candy Kingdom: A sprawling, scientifically managed monarchy built out of sentient confectionery.

The Ice Kingdom: A frozen, mountainous tundra claimed by an eccentric monarch bound to the ancient, madness-inducing magical crown.

The Fire Kingdom: A subterranean realm governed by volatile pyromaniac monarchy.

The Slime Kingdom: A subterranean ooze-filled society.

Wizards and Artifacts: Magic fully saturated the land, drawing out wizards, goblins, talking animals, and ancient cosmic gods (such as entities governing dreams, death, and time) who interacted regularly with the mortal plane. Technology from the old human world was largely forgotten, viewed by the new inhabitants as mysterious, ancient "treasures" from pre-history.
