THE WORLD OF ETHEREA

Creation and the First God

Etherea is an ancient fantasy world shaped by divine powers, mortal civilizations, magic, and countless ages of conflict and change. Its origins are rooted in the acts of [Creator Deity], whose creation gave rise to the world and the Old Pantheon. The Old Pantheon established the earliest divine order, shaping the relationship between gods, mortal life, and the natural world. Their history forms the foundation of Etherea's oldest religious traditions, legends, and supernatural mysteries.

The Known World

Etherea contains a vast central continent surrounded by seas, islands, remote territories, and lands beyond the reach of established civilization. The central continent was once dominated by the Sol Empire, whose collapse divided its former territories into six competing kingdoms. Beyond these political borders lie independent settlements, ancient wildernesses, isolated peoples, and dangerous frontiers. The known world includes the Kun Islands, Behemoth Isles, Zmey Isles, Typhon Wilds, and other established regions. The Behemoth Isles are home to dinosaurs, while the Typhon Wilds harbor enormous creatures. Each region possesses its own geography, ecology, inhabitants, and history. Much of the wider world remains poorly documented, leaving distant continents, unexplored waters, and forgotten places beyond common knowledge.

The Mortal Races

Etherea is inhabited by numerous intelligent races, each possessing distinct physical characteristics, ancestry, and historical traditions. Known peoples include humans, elves, dwarves, half-elves, half-orcs, halflings, gnomes, goblins, kobolds, goliaths, dragonborn, aasimar, tieflings, and awakened undead. Racial ancestry does not determine nationality, allegiance, profession, morality, or individual personality. Cultures develop through geography, history, religion, language, and shared experiences. Members of the same race may belong to vastly different societies. Many communities are multicultural, while others retain distinctive ancestral traditions.

Gods and Religion

Etherea's earliest religious traditions originated with the Old Pantheon, whose gods were worshipped long before the rise of the Church of Sole. Over centuries, the Church established its monotheistic faith, replacing the worship of the Old Pantheon with Sole as the singular divine authority. As the Church's influence expanded, older religious traditions were suppressed, abandoned, or gradually erased from public knowledge. Temples, teachings, rituals, and histories associated with the Old Pantheon faded from common memory. Most inhabitants of the former Sol Empire now know little of the gods their ancestors once worshipped. The Lunar Creed preserves surviving fragments of these forgotten traditions. Through its connection to Luna, the Creed represents one of the remaining links between the present age and the older divine order. However, even among its followers, knowledge of the complete Old Pantheon is limited. The Church of Sole remains a powerful religious institution whose influence extends throughout the former imperial territories. Its clergy and followers possess differing convictions, loyalties, and interpretations of their faith. The Church's historical suppression of older worship does not mean every member understands or supports that history. The existence, nature, and forgotten history of the Old Pantheon remain distinct from what modern religious institutions teach about them.

The Present Age

The known world stands in the aftermath of the Sol Empire's collapse. Following the Emperor's death, his six sons divided the imperial realm, establishing rival kingdoms beneath six colored Suns. The resulting War of the Suns continues to shape politics, commerce, military activity, travel, and everyday life across the former imperial territories.Yet the conflict is only one part of Etherea. Independent peoples, distant civilizations, ancient religious traditions, unexplored regions, and supernatural forces continue to exist beyond the ambitions of the six kingdoms.Etherea is a living world whose history extends far beyond the present war.

Technology and Civilization

Etherea is a pre-industrial fantasy world whose civilizations rely upon agriculture, craftsmanship, maritime trade, animal transportation, and established magical practices. Settlements range from isolated villages and frontier communities to fortified towns and prosperous cities. Architecture, clothing, weapons, transportation, and infrastructure vary according to local resources, cultural traditions, wealth, and technological knowledge. Magic exists alongside conventional technology rather than universally replacing it.

Languages and Cultures

Etherea contains numerous languages, customs, and cultural traditions shaped by geography, ancestry, migration, trade, and historical contact. Racial identity does not automatically determine language or culture. Individuals commonly adopt the language and customs of the societies in which they are raised. Multicultural settlements, regional dialects, ancestral languages, and distinct local traditions exist throughout the known world. No single culture represents every member of a race.

Time and the Calendar

Time passes consistently throughout Etherea. Days, seasons, and years govern agriculture, trade, travel, religious observances, and everyday life. Climate and seasonal conditions vary geographically. Historical events occur within a shared chronology, allowing the passage of time, the ages of individuals, and the duration of political conflicts to remain consistent. Specific calendar conventions and historical dates are established in their corresponding lore entries.

The Wider World

The six kingdoms of the former Sol Empire represent only part of Etherea's inhabited world. Beyond their borders exist independent civilizations, isolated communities, ancient settlements, maritime societies, and peoples whose histories developed apart from imperial rule. Some maintain contact through trade, migration, exploration, or diplomacy, while others remain largely unknown to the continental powers. The known world is not the entirety of Etherea, and unexplored territories are not necessarily uninhabited or uncivilized. The ambitions and conflicts of the six kingdoms do not determine the affairs of every people or region.
