An Anti-Paladin (often called a Blackguard, Oubliette Knight, or Oathbreaker) is the dark mirror of the traditional Paladin. They are champions of evil and chaos, having either fallen from a path of virtue or, more commonly, sworn a terrible, deliberate oath to a malevolent entity or principle.
They are not just villains; they are figures of corrupted commitment whose power is fueled by the inversion of justice and faith.
While a Paladin upholds a sacred oath of honor, truth, and light, the Anti-Paladin is bound by a demonic or vile pact that grants them power in exchange for serving a dark cause. Their "code" is an inversion of virtue:
Self-Interest and Power: The Anti-Paladin views power as the only true virtue. They value strength, domination, and personal gain above all else. They are often incredibly self-centered, believing their might justifies any cruelty.
Contempt for the Weak: They despise weakness and charity. Acts of mercy are seen as pathetic failures, and the suffering of the innocent is a sign of their own superiority and the strength of their dark patron.
The Power of Corruption: They value the corruption of others more than their destruction. Breaking a virtuous person, especially a Paladin or Priest, is a prized victory.
Absolute Loyalty to the Dark Oath: While they may betray comrades, they are fanatically loyal to the dark entity or destructive principle from which they draw their power. This oath is the source of their strength and the foundation of their identity.
Anti-Paladins fight with the zeal of a zealot combined with the cruelty of a predator. Their abilities often mimic and pervert a Paladin's powers.

In Battle: They prefer to engage virtuous foes directly, savoring the clash between light and darkness. They are front-line warriors clad in heavy, often jagged or black iron armor, preferring devastating two-handed weapons or a shield and a mace for crushing blows. They use magic to debuff enemies, summon minor demons or undead, and protect themselves with shields of negative energy.
The Anti-Paladin's ambitions are typically large, dark, and focused on upending the natural order:
Establishing Dark Domains: Their primary goal is to carve out a territory where their dark oath is the law. They seek to rule over fearful subjects, converting temples of light into shrines of their patron and enforcing a tyrannical, cruel government.
Corrupting Holy Sites: They actively seek out and desecrate places of worship, fountains of light, or ancient holy groves, twisting their sacred energies for dark rituals.
The Quest for the Pure Heart: Many are tasked with—or simply driven by the desire to—hunt, capture, and ritually sacrifice a being of pure, celestial good (a Paladin, an Angel, a high priest) to gain a permanent boost of dark power.
Sowing Chaos and Despair: Even without a grand scheme, the Oathbreaker fundamentally exists to prove that virtue is futile and that evil is the ultimate truth. They aim to break the will of the populace and turn them away from the gods of light.
The Anti-Paladin’s aesthetic is driven by the colors associated with death, decay, and the abyss:
Obsidian Black: For their heavy, lacquered armor.
Deep Crimson/Blood Red: For surcoats, banners, and the glow of their weapons.
Tarnished Bronze or Verdigris: For accents on their armor, suggesting corruption and decay.
Vile Green (Blight): The color of necrotic energy, poison, and the foul miasma of a dying place.
An Anti-Paladin often carries the scent of the dark energies they channel:
Ozone and Cold Iron: A metallic, sterile scent mixed with the chill of necromancy or the cold emptiness of the void.
Sulfur and Burning Brimstone: If their patron is a major demon or devil from the Lower Planes.
Stagnant Water and Grave Dust: For those who follow gods of undeath or rot.
Bitter Smoke and Old Blood: A warrior's smell, but one tinged with the metallic, chemical scent of fresh slaughter.
Their names are often evocative of their fall from grace or their new devotion to darkness, typically combining a noble or historical name with a title of dread.
