Eirik Skullcaller

Eirik Skullcaller

The White Seer of Whispering Peak

"The dead are not my servants. They are my oldest companions."

Appearance

Eirik Skullcaller is an imposing old human whose appearance has become the source of countless legends throughout northern Eyr. Standing nearly seven feet tall, he possesses the broad shoulders and weathered physique of a Norse warrior, though age has slowed neither his presence nor his strength.

His long snow-white beard reaches his waist, braided with iron rings, raven feathers, and tiny carved skulls made from bone. Matching white hair falls beneath an ancient iron helmet crowned with the antlers of a colossal mountain elk. The antlers have become his symbol, making him instantly recognizable to those who survive meeting him.

His pale blue eyes seem almost lifeless, glowing faintly with icy light whenever he calls upon necromantic magic. His weather-beaten face is lined with countless wrinkles and old battle scars, giving him the appearance of a man who has endured centuries of hardship.

He wears heavy furs layered over dark chainmail, stitched together with wolf pelts, bear hides, and raven feathers. Across his back hangs an enormous rune-carved greataxe called Gravewinter, while a staff fashioned from the antler of an ancient elk serves as his walking stick and magical focus.

Three ravens are almost always nearby, silently observing visitors from the rocks above.

Description

High in the frozen mountains known as the Whispering Peaks, where blizzards rage and few dare travel, stands a lonely stone longhouse surrounded by weathered standing stones and ancient burial mounds.

This is the home of Eirik Skullcaller.

To the people of Eyr, he is known by many names:

The White Seer.

The Bone King.

The Hermit of Whispering Peak.

Some believe he commands armies of undead.

Others say he speaks directly with the spirits of fallen kings.

Most simply avoid his mountain entirely.

Background

Long before the Witch Mother conquered Blackhat, Eirik was the greatest shaman of the northern tribes. He fought beside jarls, advised kings, and defended the mountain clans against trolls, giants, and dragons.

Unlike other shamans, Eirik believed death was not something to fear.

He viewed it as another path of wisdom.

When warriors fell in battle, he spoke with their spirits to learn forgotten knowledge and preserve their memories for future generations.

Everything changed during the Winter of Black Ash, when an unknown darkness swept across the mountains and nearly destroyed the northern tribes. Eirik turned to forbidden necromancy, raising fallen warriors to defend the living.

The mountains were saved.

But the northern clans branded him a heretic.

Rather than fight those he had protected, Eirik exiled himself to Whispering Peak.

For nearly a century he has lived alone, studying the boundary between life and death.

Personality

Eirik is calm, thoughtful, and surprisingly gentle for someone surrounded by skeletons and spirits. He speaks slowly, choosing each word with care, and rarely wastes time on meaningless conversation.

He has little interest in politics or wealth. Instead, he values wisdom, honor, and remembering those who came before.

Although he practices necromancy, Eirik despises those who enslave the dead for power. Every spirit he summons comes willingly, and every undead guardian under his care is created from warriors who chose to continue protecting the mountains after death.

He openly condemns the Witch Mother's abuse of necromancy, believing she has corrupted an ancient and sacred art.

Mannerisms

  • Pauses before speaking, as though listening to unseen voices.

  • Runs his fingers through his beard while deep in thought.

  • Frequently feeds his three ravens before feeding himself.

  • Carves runes into bone whenever he meditates.

  • Stares into campfires for long periods without blinking.

  • Refers to the dead by name, never as corpses.

  • Never enters a burial mound without first asking permission aloud.

  • Laughs quietly whenever someone calls him a villain.

  • Ends important conversations by saying, "Even death remembers."

Whispering Peak

Eirik's home is a massive timber longhouse built upon the highest accessible ridge of Whispering Peak. Ancient standing stones surround it, each engraved with the names of long-dead heroes.

Inside are towering bookshelves filled with weathered scrolls, skulls carved with glowing runes, preserved relics of forgotten kings, and a roaring fire that never seems to burn out.

Behind the longhouse lies The Hall of Ancestors, a vast cave where the honored dead of the northern tribes rest. Their skeletal remains stand silently in perfect order, waiting only if Eirik should ever ask for their aid.

Secrets

Very few know that Eirik is one of the last people alive who can read the language of the First Civilization.

Hidden beneath Whispering Peak is an ancient observatory built long before kings ruled Eyr. There, Eirik has uncovered prophecies describing the return of The First Darkness and the role of the Demon Amulet in breaking the ancient seals.

He believes the Witch Mother is only part of a much older story.

He has spent decades waiting for heroes capable of preventing the prophecy from coming true.
