Far to the northwest of Bramblebrook, beyond the Golden Fields and the rolling hills, lies Mirrormere Lake, the largest freshwater lake in eastern Eyr. Its dark waters stretch for miles, disappearing into the mist at the horizon. Ancient pine forests surround its shores, while towering cliffs rise along its northern edge.
On calm days, the lake is so still that it reflects the sky like polished glass, giving rise to its name. But beneath its tranquil surface lies a darkness few have ever returned to describe.
No one knows how deep Mirrormere truly is.
Fishermen have lowered hundreds of feet of rope without ever touching the bottom.
Some believe the lake has no end.
Others claim it reaches into the Underworld itself.
The oldest stories say Mirrormere existed before the First Civilization. According to ancient folklore, the lake was formed when a star fell from the heavens, leaving behind a crater so deep that the world's waters rushed in to fill it.
The Four Sisters are said to have visited Mirrormere during their youth. While Thistle admired the untouched wilderness and Nyx sought the lake's hidden mysteries, the Witch Mother reportedly stood upon its shore for an entire night without speaking.
When dawn came, she simply whispered:
"Something looked back."
No one knows what she saw.
The southern shoreline is peaceful, with pebble beaches and quiet fishing spots used by the people of Bramblebrook.
The western shore is marshy, home to giant frogs, snakes, and clouds of biting insects.
The eastern shore is lined with ancient pines, where abandoned cabins and forgotten shrines slowly decay beneath the trees.
The northern cliffs plunge straight into the water, their caves accessible only by boat—or by something that lives beneath the surface.
Mirrormere is home to many dangerous inhabitants:
Giant Pike
Giant Catfish
Giant Crabs
Giant Toads
Giant Constrictor Snakes
Giant Crocodiles (rare)
Swarms of Quippers
Water Weirds
Giant Otters
Harpies nesting upon the cliffs
Will-o'-Wisps drifting over the water at night
Some fishermen speak of a creature so enormous that entire boats disappear without leaving debris behind.
A small dock where local fishermen launch their boats.
Steep black cliffs whose caves echo with strange voices carried by the wind.
A tiny island holding the remains of an ancient shrine dedicated to forgotten lunar spirits.
Visible beneath the clear water on bright days, the top of an impossibly old stone tower rests far below the surface.
Near the center of the lake, the water forms a perfectly circular area of unnatural darkness where no fish swim and no bird lands.
Fishermen have vanished without a trace.
A valuable family heirloom has sunk near the Sunken Tower.
Strange lights drift across the lake every full moon.
Goblin traders claim they heard singing from beneath the water.
A wounded giant eagle has built its nest upon the northern cliffs.
Deep beneath Mirrormere lies The Drowned Sanctum, an ancient temple built by the First Civilization. Its crystal halls remain perfectly preserved beneath the lake, protected by powerful magic that keeps the water at bay.
Within the sanctum rests one of the four original seals imprisoning The First Darkness. The temple's guardians still stand watch after thousands of years, waiting for the day someone comes seeking the truth.
Most people believe Mirrormere is simply a beautiful lake.
The wise know better.
In Eyr, the oldest places are never empty—and the deepest waters always keep their secrets.
