Hidden beneath the streets of Blackhat, in forgotten catacombs and abandoned wine cellars, operates one of the most dangerous secret societies in all of Eyr: The Ashen Covenant.
To the Witch Mother, they are traitors.
To the people of Blackhat, they are little more than whispered rumors.
To themselves...
They are the last hope for Eyr.
Although the Covenant reveres The Book of the Four Sisters, they believe the Witch Mother has betrayed the sacred teachings and twisted the gift of magic into a tool of domination. They do not seek to destroy the Four Sisters—they seek to stop one of them before she brings about the return of the First Darkness.
The Ashen Covenant teaches that the Four Sisters were never meant to become rulers.
Each sister was chosen to preserve one part of the world's balance:
The Witch Mother was to guard the boundary between life and death.
Thistle was entrusted with nature.
Nyx with knowledge.
Vesper with hope.
According to the Covenant, the Witch Mother abandoned her sacred duty the moment she began raising armies of the dead and searching for the Demon Amulet.
To them, she is no longer the Guardian of Death.
She has become its prisoner.
The Covenant's hidden sanctuary is known as The Ember Crypt.
It lies beneath the oldest district of Blackhat, concealed behind an abandoned mausoleum whose entrance can only be opened by reciting a passage from the Book of the Four Sisters.
Inside, candlelit tunnels lead to libraries, hidden shrines, meeting halls, armories, and escape passages that stretch beneath much of the city.
Many members live ordinary lives above ground.
By day they are:
Blacksmiths
Priests
Bakers
Guards
Apothecaries
Merchants
Stable hands
By night...
They become spies, saboteurs, smugglers, and protectors of the innocent.
Every member swears the same oath.
"Where darkness commands, we shall endure.
Where hope fades, we shall kindle.
Where fear rules, we shall remember.
The flame may be hidden.
It shall never die."
Breaking the Creed is considered the greatest betrayal.
The Covenant is led by a mysterious figure known only as The First Flame.
No member knows their true identity.
Some believe the First Flame is an elderly priest who once advised the Witch Mother.
Others believe it is one of her former generals.
A few whisper something even more astonishing—that the First Flame was once one of the Witch Mother's closest friends before her descent into darkness.
Only the Circle of Embers, the Covenant's inner council, knows the truth.
The leaders of the Covenant are known collectively as the Circle of Embers.
Each oversees one aspect of the resistance.
The Flamekeeper – Spiritual leader and interpreter of the Book.
The Whisper – Master of spies and intelligence.
The Lantern – Protector of refugees and safe houses.
The Ashblade – Commander of the Covenant's warriors.
The Scribe – Keeper of ancient knowledge and forbidden histories.
Each member wears a simple iron ring marked with a burning ember.
No names are spoken during meetings.
Only titles.
Unlike the Witch Mother's armies, the Ashen Covenant rarely wages open war.
Instead they:
Smuggle persecuted families out of Blackhat.
Destroy necromantic laboratories.
Steal relics before the Witch Mother can claim them.
Spread hidden messages through coded scripture.
Rescue political prisoners.
Gather information on the Demon Amulet.
Recruit heroes willing to oppose tyranny.
Their greatest weapon is secrecy.
Though they trust few outsiders, the Covenant quietly maintains contact with:
Thistle's druids, who provide hidden forest routes.
Vesper's agents in Moonveil, who shelter refugees.
Sympathetic scholars from Aetherion, who preserve ancient records.
Independent adventurers willing to challenge the Witch Mother's rule.
Officially, none of these groups admit the alliance exists.
The Ashen Covenant is hunted relentlessly by:
The Witch Mother's Zealots.
Blackhat's Inquisitors.
Necromancer Orders.
The Bone Guard.
Corrupt nobles who profit from the Witch Mother's rule.
Captured members are rarely imprisoned.
They simply disappear.
Hidden deep beneath the Ember Crypt is a forgotten chamber from the First Civilization.
Within it burns the First Ember, a small, eternal flame that has never gone out in over five thousand years.
According to the oldest writings, it was lit by the architects who created the Four Great Seals. The flame cannot be extinguished by water, wind, or magic. It represents the world's enduring hope against the First Darkness.
The leaders of the Ashen Covenant believe an ancient prophecy:
"When the First Ember burns beside the Demon Amulet...
The true heir of balance shall be revealed."
Whether that heir is one of the Four Sisters, a forgotten king, or an unknown adventurer remains a mystery.
Until that day, the Ashen Covenant continues its silent war beneath the streets of Blackhat, proving that even in the darkest city in Eyr...
A single ember can still challenge the night.
