The Emerald Expanse

The Emerald Expanse

The Great Forest of Southeastern Eyr

Recommended Levels: 5–12

Covering nearly the entire southeastern corner of Eyr, the Emerald Expanse is the largest forest in the realm. Ancient oak trees, towering pines, silver birches, and giant redwoods rise hundreds of feet into the sky, their branches weaving together to form a living canopy that keeps much of the forest in perpetual twilight.

The forest floor is carpeted with emerald moss, glowing fungi, and carpets of wildflowers. Crystal-clear rivers wind through the woods, while waterfalls plunge into hidden pools surrounded by towering cliffs. Despite its breathtaking beauty, few travelers dare venture far beneath the ancient trees.

The Emerald Expanse is alive.

Not merely with animals...

But with magic.

The Living Forest

The Deep Elves believe the forest possesses its own spirit, older than dragons and older than the Four Sisters. The trees communicate through their roots, animals instinctively protect sacred places, and the wind itself seems to whisper warnings to those willing to listen.

Paths change overnight.

Bridges appear where none existed.

Entire groves vanish beneath thick magical mist.

Those who enter without respect often find themselves hopelessly lost.

Those welcomed by the forest always find the way they seek.

Flora

The Emerald Expanse is home to countless rare plants.

  • Moon Lilies that bloom only under a full moon.

  • Silverleaf Oaks whose bark can be used in powerful healing potions.

  • Whispering Pines that sing softly when the wind blows.

  • Glowcap Mushrooms that illuminate hidden caves.

  • Bloodroot Vines used in powerful magical rituals.

  • Sun Orchids, prized by alchemists across Eyr.

Many of these plants exist nowhere else.

Fauna

Life flourishes beneath the forest canopy.

Common creatures include:

  • Great Stags

  • Dire Wolves

  • Giant Eagles

  • Brown Bears

  • Giant Boars

  • Giant Spiders

  • Giant Elk

  • Panthers

  • Owlbears

  • Treants

  • Dryads

  • Unicorns

  • Blink Dogs

  • Faerie Dragons

  • Crystal Butterflies

  • Arcane Wisps

Legends also speak of ancient dragons sleeping beneath the oldest trees.

Notable Locations

Moonfall Glade

A peaceful clearing where moonlight shines day and night.

Many druids consider it sacred.

Whisperroot Grove

An enormous circle of oak trees believed to be among the oldest living beings in Eyr.

Some claim they remember the First Civilization.

Crystal Falls

A magnificent waterfall cascading into a lake filled with glowing blue crystals.

The Deep Elves often gather here to meditate.

The Hollow King

A tree so massive that an entire village could fit inside its hollow trunk.

Deep Elf lore claims the first archmages held council within its living heart.

The Hidden Gates

Ancient stone arches covered in vines that serve as concealed entrances to Aetherion, the hidden realm of the Deep Elves.

Only those invited by the forest—or guided by Deep Elf wardens—can pass through them.

Adventure Hooks

  • A unicorn has been wounded by dark magic.

  • Hunters have disappeared after following strange singing deeper into the woods.

  • Giant spiders have begun nesting close to the Hidden Gates.

  • A corrupted Treant has started attacking anyone entering its grove.

  • Deep Elf scouts seek brave adventurers to investigate mysterious shadows spreading through the forest.

The Forest Wardens

The Emerald Expanse is protected by the Emerald Wardens, an elite order of Deep Elf rangers, druids, beastmasters, and spellblades. They patrol the ancient trails, defend sacred sites, and ensure that no force threatens the balance of the forest.

The Wardens are almost invisible in their homeland. Travelers often never realize they are being watched until an arrow lands at their feet as a warning.

The Hidden Secret

At the very center of the Emerald Expanse grows the World Oak, a colossal tree said to have sprouted when Eyr itself was born. Its roots stretch across the entire continent, touching every ancient magical site—from Eldermoor and Grimstone to Mirrormere and beyond.

The Deep Elves believe the World Oak is the heart of the land.

If it should ever fall, Eyr itself would begin to die.

For this reason, the Emerald Expanse is not merely a forest.

It is a living sanctuary, the greatest source of natural magic in the realm, and one of the last places where the ancient spirit of Eyr still speaks to those willing to listen.
